Revere Youth Baseball and Softball

All Stars head home, playoffs continue

By Jonathan Chang

Revere Youth Baseball’s 11U and 13U All Stars have tough news this week: They’re on their way home.

The 13U All Stars had quite the journey, as different players starred in different games.

Against Arlington, Revere relied on Chris Cassidy and Mike Popp to claim a close 3-2 win. Next, a Doug McGrath and Kevin Murillo stepped up as the 13U team obliterated Winchester, 11-3. After the destruction brought a wind of momentum, the energy proved to be unsustainable as Walpole sent the team home with a 5-0 loss.

Plenty of action remains for Revere Youth Baseball and Softball (RYBS), however, as the league continues its Major League Baseball and Softball Playoffs this week.

Four teams compete for the softball playoffs this week. The Jets will look to topple the top-seeded Titans, while the Flyers will face the Lightning. On the baseball end, the semifinal round will feature the Red Sox facing the defending champion Cubs, while the top-seeded Indians face the Cardinals.

Notes from RYBS:

  • [The 11U All Stars] fought hard but were unable to move past the regionals and are on their way home. The 13U [All Stars were] derailed by the blistering 95-degree heat and the cool demeanor of Walpole, as they left the tournament on the wrong side of the 5-0 game.
  • Softball: The Jets led by the battery of Brenna Giannetti and Grace Coffey take on the top-seeded Titans and their battery of Jaden Pacitta and Destiny Lopez. The other side of the bracket sees the one-two pitching punch of Giuliana Micciche and Gianna Scoppettuolo from the Flyers battle the two-headed mound monster that is Isabella Qualiteri and Cynthia Rodriguez and the Lightning.
  • Baseball: The Baseball Semifinals see the Red Sox battering ram, led by Patrick Keefe and Donis Rodriguez, take on the defending champion Cubs and their octopus armed pitching staff, led by Giancarlo Miro, Jarred Pacitta, Brendan Sack and Nicholas Simpson. The top-seeded Indians led by Sal DeAngelis and Kyle Cummings look to continue their winning ways (2-0-1 in the regular season) against the Cardinals with the rocket armed J.P. Nowicki and the laser focused Ollie Svendsen.

See you at the Field!

Jon Shepard tossed a one-hitter and his battery-mate Kyle Rufo scored the game’s only runs as the Revere Rockies shut out the East Boston Knights 2-0 in a City Line rivalry Yawkey League baseball action Friday night, July 6, at East Boston Memorial Field.

Shepard gave up a second-inning leadoff single to Knights DH Kenny Luongo, who was then erased in a double-play. After that, no Knights batter got beyond the batter’s box.

The Rockies got the only run they’d need in the fifth inning.

With one out, Rufo walked, then went to third on a Mike Lembo single to right.  Lembo was tossed out at second base on a DJ Reed grounder to second, leaving runners at first and third with two out. At this point, Knights pitcher Watanabe Tanayuki tired, giving up consecutive walks to Adam Del Rio and Alex Wong to push Rufo home and give the Rockies a 1-0 lead.

In the seventh, Del Rio gave the Rockies and Shepard a bit of breathing room with a two-out single that drove home Rufo, who had led off the inning with a walk.

Friday’s win, along with a 6-5 win over the Savin Hill Dodgers Sunday and a 9-2 loss Monday to the Brighton Braves, left the Rockies’ record at 14-5 to keep them atop the Yawkey League’s Yastrzemski Division going into Wednesday’s game at Charlestown.  The Knights bounced back with an 8-1 win over the Al Thomas Athletics Monday to improve their record to 6-10-1.

The win pushed the Rockies’ record to 13-4 to keep them atop the Yawkey League’s Yastrzemski Division, while the Knights dropped to 5-10-1.

The Yawkey Baseball League is one of the top amateur baseball leagues in Eastern Massachusetts. Playing continuously since the 1950s, the League has been known at various times as the Boston City League, the Twilight League, and the Junior Park League before its affiliation with the Yawkey Foundation in 1990.

The League consists of ten teams:  the Ted Williams Division consists of the Brighton Braves, McKay Club Beacons, Charlestown Townies, Stoneham Sabers, and Brighton Black Sox.  The Carl Yastrzemski Division includes the Rockies, Knights, South Boston Saints, the Al Thomas Athletics, and the Savin Hill Dodgers.
