Beautification Committee Celebrates 15 Years

By Sue Ellen Woodcock

It started with the simple idea of addressing problem litter around the city and today, 15 years later, the Revere Beautification Committee (RBC) is making sure Revere looks the best it can.

“We work collaboratively with the city,” said board member Carol Haney

The scope of work done by the committee began at the beach and has traveled all over the city from the sponsored trash barrels to the flowers at the Garfield School.

Committee chair Eleanor Vieira said the group has about 20 volunteers and more are always welcome.

“Any non-profit group who wants to help can,” Vieira said.

One of the committee’s finest pieces of work is Bell Circle, a collaboration with the committee, the city and the Comfort Inn. New landscaping, new lighting has made a gateway to the city look the best that it can.

The committee also partners with the Department of Conservation and Recreation (DCR) for work on the beach. The two organizations meet monthly and the committee works with DCR in making the trash barrels available on the beach through a matching  grant program.

“They have been wonderful partners,” Haney said.

The partnership also led to the committee having drinking fountains installed at the beach. That led to the remodeling of the bathrooms and the planting of all the flowers at the beach. The flowers on the beach were started by the committee and then turned it over to DCR.

The committee has worked on portions of Squire Road and Shirley Avenue. She looks forward to the committee working with Councillors Ira Novoselsky and John Powers on fixing up Butler Circle.

Vieira said they are all pushing for the city to pass a covered dumpster ordinance, a shopping cart ordinance and get the fire hydrants painted.

The Revere Beautification Committee is also responsible for the home and business beautification awards, given to property owners who go the extra mile to make their property look its best.

“People live in Revere for years and take care of their property,” Vieira said.

The committee also works with the city’s “See Click Fix” program and has an anonymous hotline – 781-485-2770.

The Revere Beautification  Committee meets the first Monday of the month at 6 p.m. at the St. George on Revere Beach. Also visit the committee’s website at www.reverebeautification.org
