Vincent Conte

Late proprietor of Vin’s Auto Service, a Revere man through and through who had wisdom and kindness

Vincent Conte of Revere passed away unexpectedly on February 7. He was 87 years old.

The longtime companion of the late Rae Barrasso and the former husband of Rosemarie “Chickie” Sorrentino, he was the loving father of Vincent R. Conte and his wife, Patricia of Marblehead, Donna Conte and her husband, Thomas Jacob of Peabody and Kimberly Barrasso of Revere; adored grandfather of Nicole and Julie O’Brien, Ariana and Eva Conte, and Anthony Belmonte; cherished great-grandfather of Domenic Belmonte and Dante Barrasso and dear brother of the late Anthony Conte and his late wife, Angelina. He is also survived by many nieces and nephews.

“How do you sum up a man’s life in a few paragraphs? I am talking about a very special man named Vincent Dante Conte and he was my dad.

He was born in Brooklyn, New York, almost on the boat from Italy. He didn’t speak a word of English, but he was persistent and wanted to fit into the American culture.  My grandfather and grandmother migrated to the North End of Boston and then finally settled in a small town called Revere.

My grandfather was a tailor and my father and my Uncle Tony picked up the trade on Harrison Street in Boston making pea coats for the military and the soldiers going to war during World War II. That is where he met Rosemarie, in a clothing factory, making five cents per pocket on each coat.            Rosemarie had some issues but Vin and Tony came to the rescue to help her out.  Their friendship began at a young age but continued on to a 19 year marriage. Vin was also a doting son and always took care of his mom, Linda Conte who lived on Mountain Avenue in Revere.

At the very young age of 23, my dad took the biggest chance of his life and opened a  business of his own, “Vin’s Auto Service,” which has been in business 56 years—a major accomplishment. He had worked at a ladder company in Lynn and decided that it was too dangerous with two young babies.  He did what he did best, he went on to an automotive repair career.

He was handy and smart and all the customers loved him (and still do even after he retired several years ago).

Vin started out small and accomplished much despite his humble beginnings. He was their car doctor and they trusted him because his work ethic and his integrity were outstanding.

He loved Revere Beach in its hay day. He danced at the Frolic, Wonderland Ballroom, the ITAM Club and the Grand Pier, which burned down many years ago.      He enjoyed the pleasures of old Revere Beach with the roller coaster, The Wild Mouse that I always went on with him and going to the Sunday bandstand to hear our Grandpa Emilio play in the Army Band.

The changes he witnessed were remarkable, sometimes good, but I think he always missed the old simpler ways of life.

As time went by, his children grew up and had families of their own; Donna had two girls, Nicole and Julie, and Vin Jr. also had two girls named Ariana and Eva. Vin Sr. had a relationship for many years with Rae and our loving family expanded to also include her daughter, Kim, and baby, Dante.

He transferred the business to his doting and loving son, Vin Jr. and together they accomplished so much in business and as friends as the years went by.        Vin Sr. and Vin Jr. had many lunches together over the years in and around Revere. They talked over business and life and the father-son relationship flourished. He was a Revere man, through and through.  He built a life for his family and was always in attendance for all his grandchildren’s activities and accomplishments.

My father was a gardener and I thrived to be just as good but I will never be as good as him—there were no weeds in his garden and he had the best tomatoes and basil around. He made sure that he was able to walk his daughter down the aisle and made sure he gave a heartwarming speech at the wedding which I will treasure, always.

He had wisdom and kindness and made donations to various causes and was very loyal to his doctors at Mass General, for they helped him survive his bout with cancer.   There was life after cancer and he appreciated and valued things more.        His doctors always looked forward to seeing him.

We had grown especially close over the last few years because I was the chauffer. We traveled to Boston together and enjoyed and cherished our conversations about politics. Dad enjoyed the many house parties at my house and Vin’s, but he especially loved my beef stew and my Italian delicacies.

My father was able to see history with the Patriot’s big win this year in the Super Bowl. He was blessed by his loving family and friends and has touched the hearts of many through the years.

He will be truly missed but never forgotten.

Funeral arrangements were entrusted to Vazza’s “Beechwood” Funeral Home, Revere. A Funeral Mass at St. Anthony’s Church was followed by interment in Woodlawn Cemetery, Everett. In lieu of flowers, remembrances may be made in Vincent’s name to Mass General Development Office 125 Nashua St. Suite 540 Boston, MA 02114. [email protected].
