Kelly Weighing All Options to Balance Budget:Sports Could be Affected

By Cary Shuman

Supt. of Schools Dr. Dianne Kelly said she is “weighing all options” in relation to the cost cutting measures she intends to implement in the schools’ budget. Those measures could affect the scheduling of Revere High School athletic home games in the future.

Kelly stated in a story in last week’s Journal that “we will drastically curtailing any form of overtime,” resulting in events at the schools being rescheduled to conclude at 6 p.m. She also said school field trips could also be affected by the cutbacks in spending.

Followers of Revere High sports teams wondered whether games traditionally held at night would have be moved to the afternoon. For example, RHS boys and girls basketball home games are held in the evening hours with varsity games commencing at 7 p.m.  JV games begin 90 minutes before varsity games.

Kelly stated that the scheduling of some athletic competitions is under the jurisdiction of the Massachusetts Interscholastic Athletic Association (MIAA). During the MIAA Tournament, the RHS girls basketball team’s two home games had starting times of 7 p.m. and 7:30 p.m. The majority of MIAA tournament games are played on weekday nights.

“We are weighing all options at this point,” said Kelly. “In some cases, such as MIAA athletic competitions, we have little say in the matter. But where we do have options, we will be looking to save money everywhere possible starting right away.

“As new information about the budget emerges from the House of Representative and State Senate, we will take measures either to further restrict or to release restrictions based on where the budget lands. Whenever possible, the 6 p.m. closing will begin now but there are some things already scheduled and advertised to take place after that time. We don’t want to disrupt those things but we can be contemplative as we plan new events to ensure they end before 6 p.m.
