Boys basketball team defeats Chelsea, Winthrop

The Revere High boys basketball team earned a pair of hard-fought victories over their biggest archrivals this past week, defeating Chelsea and Winthrop.

Thursday’s contest at Chelsea brought the Patriots into a raucous environment in the CHS gym, which has come to be the norm in recent years whenever these two ancient rivals get together for the Battle of Broadway.

The contest was a back-and-forth affair all evening, with neither team able to open up some daylight. Chelsea led 18-16 after the first period, but the Patriots held leads of 30-27 at the half and 50-44 after three quarters.

“We were trailing after the first quarter because we allowed their two big guys to put in eight points each, and most of those came off offensive rebounds,” said RHS head coach Adam Rizzo, whose squad yielded 25 second-chance points to Chelsea on the night. “They weren’t beating us with skill, they were just beating us physically on the glass. We were equally as big as they were, but were playing small and that’s what allowed Chelsea to stay in the game throughout as we allowed an astounding 18 offensive rebounds. If we cut that in half, we run away with this game easily.”

However, what the Patriots did have going for them was a superior outside shooting game. Revere hit on nine-of-18 attempts from three-point land (compared to just 4-for-17 for Chelsea). Marcus Brunson (who had four treys on the night) was Revere’s top gun in the opening half with 14 of his game-high 20 points

In addition, the duo of Mass Joof and Marvin Urdaneta, who scored seven and six points respectively in the first half, were able to score at will in the low post. Both Mass and Marvin ended up with nine points for the evening.

After the intermission, the leading offensive contributions for Revere came from Gerald Charles and Janard Jones. Gerald scored all nine of his points after the intermission, including a pair of clutch fee throws with nine seconds to play that sealed the win.

Janard pumped in 12 of his 15 points over the final 16 minutes, including three of his four three-pointers.

“We have scorers all over the floor, whether it be on the post, from long range, or slashing to the rim,” noted Rizzo. “What’s scary is we have yet to see all of them playing well at the same time. This was the closest thing we have seen to all of them doing their thing.

“In the first half, our big guys were eating Chelsea up on the inside with Brunson pouring it in from distance,” continued Rizzo. “In the second half, we went to Charles and Jones for most of our offense. It was a great collective effort from the boys.”

It should be noted that a key to the Patriot victory was their shooting from the free throw line. Revere sank 16-of-17 attempts from the charity stripe, a clip of 94 percent. Chelsea was just 9-for-18 from the line, a 50 percent success rate.

Fan note: Chelsea and Revere will engage again on Wednesday, February 10, in what promises to be another barnburner, this time at the RHS gym. The evening also will be highlighted by Senior Night festivities for the Revere seniors.

Two nights earlier, the Patriots hosted Winthrop, their other perennial chief rival, and cruised to a 58-41 victory. The Patriots came out smoking’ and jumped out to a 17-2 lead at the first buzzer.

“This was a big game for us in a must-win situation, especially against a rival like Winthrop,” said Rizzo. “The boys were fired up for the game and played like it, as we dominated the first quarter. It was the best quarter we have played all season long when you factor in offense and defense. We were getting stops or, even better, steals that would lead to easy transition buckets. We got lucky a couple of times when Winthrop missed shots that were very make-able, but that’s part of the game.”

The Revere offense cooled a bit in the second period and Winthrop closed the gap to eight, 28-20, at the intermission. However, the Patriots came out after the break with renewed vigor and once again asserted their dominance to open up a 46-29 bulge at the third buzzer.

“We went with a small lineup the entire first half, with a majority of the time having four perimeter players on the floor, and that cost us on the glass, as Winthrop grabbed far too many offensive rebounds than we should have ever allowed,” noted Rizzo. “Their zone defense also kept us from getting to the rim. In addition, we weren’t knocking down shots in that second quarter and that got Winthrop back in the game.

However, Rizzo inserted the 6’-5” Joof into the lineup to start the second half and Mass immediately became a game-changer. “Mass was by far the biggest player on the floor,” noted Rizzo. “While you would think a kid his size would just pound away on the block, one of his most underrated assets is his ability to pass out of the post. He’s always looking for teammates cutting to the rim or for shooters on the perimeter. At times we would like to see him shoot more, but that’s just not in his nature. His energy was infectious and he was all over the place, whether he was grabbing rebounds, blocking shots or diving on the floor for loose balls. When you see a guy that big hitting the floor, you can’t help but want to do the same.”

Revere opened things up even further to start the fourth quarter thanks to an aggressive defense that resulted in a number of steals or long rebounds that led to fast-break buckets.

“Gerald Charles was the main beneficiary, as he was looking to run all night long,” said Rizzo. “Will Bell and Marcus Brunson did a great job keeping their heads up and finding him down the floor.”

Charles led the Pats with 19 points. Brunson hit for 16, followed by Bell with seven, Urdaneta with six, Joof with four, and the trio of John Flanders, Jordy Palma, and Jones with two points each.

Rizzo and his crew, who now have won three of the their past four games to move to 3-8 on the season, were set to host Gloucester last night (Tuesday).  They head to Bedford tomorrow evening (Thursday), travel to Danvers Friday, and trek to Beverly this coming Tuesday.

RHS girls basketball demolishes two rivals

The Revere High girls basketball team handily disposed of two foes from the South Division of the Northeastern Conference, Winthrop and Saugus, by almost identical scores of 72-34 and 72-33 this past week.

The Lady Patriots made the short trip to Winthrop last Tuesday night and took control of the contest from the opening tip. Revere jumped out to a 22-7 lead after the first quarter and led 43-19 at the half, from where the Lady Patriots cruised to the victory, which included holding Winthrop to zero points in the fourth period.

“We came out ready to play hard and together from the beginning of the game,” said RHS head coach Diana Finn. “We played tough defense against Winthrop’s Nina Bartlette (15 points), who has been the best post player we’ve seen all season.”

Ten of the 11 Lady Patriots who saw action figured in the scoring. Three Lady Patriots reached double figures, led by Valentina Pepic with 16 points, followed by Adanna Hector with 15 and Meaghan Gotham with 14. Tatiana Iacoviello added seven points, Natasha Iacoviello netted five, Martiza Scott chipped in four, the trio of Ally Hinojosa, Pam Gonzalez, and Samantha Woodman all contributed three points, and Emily DiGiulio scored two.

“I’ve been particularly impressed with our post players’ offensive skills this year,” added Finn. “Gotham, Pepic, Woodman, and Scott have been working hard to control the glass and balance the offensive attack by finishing their shots.”

Two nights later the Lady Patriots hosted Saugus. Once again Revere asserted its dominance from the outset, taking a 17-6 lead at the first buzzer which the Lady Pats expanded to 37-15 at the intermission.

The victory clinched a spot for Revere in the MIAA post-season state tournament. In addition, Finn’s crew was able to work on their zone offense as well as some man-to-man sets with both the starters and back-up players.

Scott pumped in 17 points to lead Revere in the scoring category. Gonzalez provided a double-double with 10 points and 10 rebounds. Pepic struck for 12 points and pulled down eight boards. Woodman reached double-figures with 10 points, Tatiana Iacoviello added nine, Gotham hit for eight points to go with her six rebounds, and Hinojosa chipped in three points.

“I’ve been happy with our overall effort and I’m looking forward to continuing to work hard and improve with each practice and game,” said Finn.

The Lady Patriots, who now are 11-1 for the season, were set to make the long trek to Gloucester last night (Tuesday) and will entertain Danvers Friday. They will host Beverly Monday with the JV game set for 4:30 and the varsity contest at 6:00.

RHS girls track team deadlocks with LC,  43-43

The Revere High girls indoor track team deadlocked with their Lynn Classical opponents last week to an even-steven score of 43-43.

“It was a fun meet to be a part of, as every event had crucial points up for grabs,” said EHS head coach Antonio LaBruna. “Classical has a strong relay team so we were hoping to clinch the meet beforehand, but fell one point shy. The competitiveness of the meet really led to some great times for runners on both teams which was nice to see.”

Five Lady Patriots captured first place in their individual events: Rachel Shanbar with a shotput toss of 27’-4”; Helen Perez in the 600 dash in a clocking of 1:53.9; Hannah Fitzpatrick in the 1000 in 3:33.2; Jackie Dion in the mile in 6:31.5; and Suellen Guerreiro in the two-mile in 14:13.

Second place finishers who added three points to the Revere side of the scoresheet were: Angelisa Nguyen in the 50 dash in 6.6; Jessica Cambraia in the 300 dash in 49.6; Trisha Cheever in the 1000 in 3:33.9; Monica Posada in the mile in 6:35.5; and Joanna Severino Perez in the two-mile in 14:22.4.

Adding third place points, which proved crucial in a close meet, were: Rayana Benzohra in the 50 hurdles in 8.9; Angelina Nguyen in the 50 dash in 6.6; and Joseline Argueta in the 300 dash in 50.1.

The 4 x 400 relay quartet of Cambraia, Guerreiro, Fitzpatrick, and Argueta ran their best time of the season in 4:44, but came up short to Classical’s clocking of 4:39.

“Our middle distance runners had tremendous meets,” said LaBruna. “Helen Perez took control of the 600 race early and never let up, which led to a two second personal record (PR). Erin Christopher, a freshman, also PR’d in the 600.

“Trisha Cheever ran a PR in the 1000 by a few seconds and had to come from behind in the race to do so,” added LaBruna. “She has great mental toughness as far as her approach to the race and she has gotten stronger from a conditioning standpoint as the season has progressed.”

The Lady Patriots’ next will compete in the Northeastern Conference All-League Meet Friday.

RHS boys track team  defeats Classical,     54-27

The Revere High boys track team took seven of the nine first-place finishes in their respective individual events to cruise to a 54-27 triumph over Lynn Classical last week.

Nelson Cevallos led a Patriot sweep in the high jump with a leap of 5’-10”. David Sinatra took second with a jump of 5’-6” and Edi Mujan took third, clearing the bar at 5’-4”.

Revere went 1-2 in two events. Phuc Tran topped the field in the shotput with a toss of 37’-4” and Gianni Hill took second with a throw of 36’-9”.  In the 50 hurdles, Sinatra grabbed first place in a time of 7.0 seconds and teammate Andy Em was next in 7.8.

Other winners for Revere were: Dan Murphy in the 50 dash in 5.9, a race in which Danny nipped his Ram rivals by just 0.1 and 0.2 of a second; Mujan in the 300 dash in 40.3, defeating his LC rival by just 0.3; Abubakir Aldarazy in the 600 in 1:38.6; and Zach Gentile in the 1000 in 2:56.6.

Second-place finishers for Revere were Sebastian Mejia in the mile in 5:17.9 and Zakaria Attioui in the two-mile in 11:10.

Earning third-place points for the Pats were: Arthur LaCerda in the two-mile in 12:26; Cristian Acuna in the mile in 5:53; and Alexis Umana in the 1000 in 1:45.1.

The Patriots will compete in the Northeastern Conference All-League Meet Friday.

RHS hockey team drops two contests

The Revere High hockey team played well for most of their two matches this past week, but came out on the short end of both contests.

In a 4-1 loss Saturday night to undefeated Lynn, the Patriots, despite playing  without the services of one of their top defensemen, Kevin Chiles, battled to a 1-1 deadlock through two periods against the Rams.

Lynn took a 1-0 lead in the opening period, but Revere’s Rick Briana lit the lamp in the middle stanza to knot matters at 1-1 entering the third period. However, Revere defensive breakdowns allowed Lynn to score three goals in a three-minute span in the final period to pull ahead for the 4-1 victory.

Saturday’s contest with Gloucester reprised the Lynn outcome. Revere stayed close through the first 30 minutes, trailing 3-1 at the second horn. Joe Ristino potted the Revere tally. However, Gloucester put the game away with a trio of goals within a short span in the third period. Chris Anderson scored for Revere amidst the Gloucester rally to make it a 4-2 contest at one point before the Fishermen added two more tallies to put the game away.

“We are playing well through two periods in many of the tougher games, but we just can’t make it a full three periods of gritty, tough-level of play,” noted RHS head coach Joe Ciccarello.

The Patriots play Swampscott tonight (Wednesday) at Salem State at 8:15 and then will host Amesbury Saturday evening at Cronin at 5:10. They trek to Peabody next Wednesday.
