RHS softball team starts with 3-1 mark

The long-delayed, but much-anticipated, 2015 season for the defending Northeastern Conference North Division and MIAA Division 1 North champion Revere High softball team got off to a busy start this past week, with the Lady Patriots playing four games in eight days.

After a season-opening win last Monday over Lynn Classical, Coach Joe Ciccarello’s crew won two of its next three encounters to start their campaign with a 3-1 record through the first week.

The Lady Patriots completed a sweep of their foes from Lynn last Wednesday with a 12-0 bashing of Lynn English. Captain Kristina Stella turned in an NEC MVP-type of performance with a three-run homer (described by Cicarello as a “laser shot over the fence”) and two triples for five RBI.

Fellow captain Sabrina Palermo fanned eight opponents in her four innings of work on the mound and freshman Gia Santaniello made an impressive varsity debut with two scoreless innings.

The Lady Patriots’ next victory was an impressive 8-3 triumph over Peabody, which traditionally is one of the top softball teams in the NEC. Palermo got off to a shaky start, walking the first two batters she faced in each of the first and second innings. However, Sabrina escaped both close calls without yielding a run and then settled down thereafter, allowing just one Peabody run in her five innings of work.

Captain Victoria Russo gave Revere a 1-0 in the first inning when she singled, stole second, and then made it to home on her ensuing steal of third when the Peabody catcher’s throw went awry.

After Peabody tied the score in the third, the Lady Patriots put the game away when they scored two runs in the fourth and exploded for five in the fifth. Santaniello came on in the sixth to toss two shutout frames. Freshman center fielder Victoria Correia wielded the hot bat, figuring prominently in both Revere rallies to account for four RBI. Correia also made an outstanding catch in center when she snared a hard-hit line drive.

Revere’s lone setback occurred in-between their victories when the Lady Patriots dropped a 4-3 decision to Medford of the Greater Boston League last Thursday. The Lady Mustangs jumped out to a 3-0 advantage in the first inning, thanks primarily to a two-run homer. An unearned run in the next frame made it a 4-0 contest.

Revere fought back, chipping away with a run in the fourth and then mounting a rally in the seventh inning that just fell short. The Lady Patriots’ trio of freshmen, Correia, Alina Giuliano, and Santaniello, who bat in the 6-7-8 slots in the RHS order, all reached base to start the inning. However, Revere managed to push across only two runs and fell short in the end, 4-3.

“It was a tough game to lose, but it was our third game in four days to start the season, and we were noticeably sluggish,” said Ciccarello. “However, what has been especially impressive thus far, and bodes well for the rest of the season, is that the bottom of our order is contributing to our offense. There are no easy outs in our lineup and that is going to make us a very difficult team to beat. We faced two strong, Division 1 pitchers against Medford and Peabody and everybody put the bat on the ball against both of them.”

Ciccarello and his crew play at Saugus at 10:00 a.m. Friday and then will face a strong challenge at perennial softball powerhouse Danvers. The Lady Patriots return home Wednesday to host Marblehead.

RHS girls track team opens season

The Revere High girls track team came up just short in its season-opening meet against Lynn Classical last week by a score of 71-65 in which the outcome of the meet came down to the last event, the 4 x 400 relay.

“Classical really took it to us in the sprint events, scoring 24 of a possible 27 points in the 100M, 200M, and 400M,” said RHS head coach Antonio LaBruna. “We outscored them in the distance and field events to keep the meet close and force a relay, but unfortunately they have one of the best relay teams in the conference.”

First place finishers for the Lady Patriots were: Hannah Fitzpatrick in the two-mile run in 14:07; Luana Santos in the 400M hurdles in 1:18.1; Janine So with a javelin toss of 74’-0”; Rachel Shanbar with a spin of the discus of 26’-9”; Catherine Elam with a triple jump of 30’-8”; Suellen Guerreiro in the mile with a clocking of 6:26; and the 4 X 100 relay quartet of Jessica Cambraia, Angelina Nguyen, Catherine Elam, and Angelisa Nguyen in 56.0.

Second-place finishers who placed three points onto the Revere side of the scoresheet were: Rania Bensadok in the 400M hurdles in 1:20.1; Joanna Severino in the two-mile run in 14:51; Rayana Benzohra in the 100M hurdles in 20.3; Rachel Shanbar with a shot-put toss of 26-’9”; Jessica Cambraia with a triple jump of 30’-1”; Danielle Fortuna in the 800 in 2:52; and Monica Posada in the mile in 6:32.

Adding single points for the Lady Patriot cause with third-place finishes were: Rania Bensadok in the 100M hurdles in 20.9;  Angelina Nguyen in the 100 dash; Jessica Cambraia in the 200 dash in 29.5; Catherine Elam in the 400 in 1:08.6; Fiona Kerthi with a throw of 56’-3” in the javelin and a toss of the shot-put of 24’-4”; Haley Langis with a high jump of 4’-2”; Catherine Elam with a long jump of 13’-5.5”; and Tricia Cheever in the mile mile in 6:39.

Saturday afternoon the Lady Patriots took on Peabody, a perennial track powerhouse in the Northeastern Conference. Revere garnered two first-place finishes with Catherine Elam taking the triple jump with a distance of 30’-5” and Suellen Guerreiro capturing the two-mile event with a clocking of 13:27, which was a personal record (PR) for Suellen by 35 seconds.

Second-place finishers for Revere were: Jessica Cambraia in the 200 dash in 29.6; Rachel Shanbar with a discus toss of 87’-3”; and Hannah Fitzpatrick in the mile in 6:06, which was a PR by 16 seconds for Hannah.

Third-place efforts came from: Helen Perez in the 100M hurdles in 20.0; Janine So with a javelin throw of 83’-5”; Catherine Elam with a long jump of 14’-3”; and Angelina Nguyen with a triple jump of 28’-9.5”.

“Sophomore Rachel Shanbar qualified for states in the discus with her throw of 87’-3”,” noted LaBruna. “This was only Rachel’s second meet throwing disc, so there is an extremely high ceiling for her. She works very hard and has set some personal goals in the event. I’m excited to see where she ends up at season’s end.

“We’ve done really well in the field events in our first couple of meets, particularly in triple jump where we have a group of talented jumpers,” continued LaBruna. “Catherine Elam has won the event in both meets with jumps over 30 feet and Angelina Nguyen has already improved over three feet from last season. Catherine jumped about a foot behind the board on her top jump Saturday, so she should be jumping 31-32 feet by season’s end.

“We’re going to have to really work to improve in the sprint events in order to stay competitive against the rest of the league this season,” added the coach. “We don’t have any star athletes, but we do have a lot of depth which we’ll have to rely on.

LaBruna and his crew are set to be back in action Tuesday (April 28) at Salem.

Anderson tosses strong game for baseball team

Although the Revere High baseball team dropped a 5-2 decision to Peabody, senior Max Anderson turned in a complete game on the mound that should bode well for the rest of the season for the Patriots.

“Max gave us an unbelievable effort. I’ve never been more proud of one of my players,” said RHS head coach Shawn Brinkley. “He threw strikes and walked only two batters. We knew coming into the season that we would need some of our players to step up for us in the pitching department. Max’s performance really has given us a lift as we look ahead to the season.”

Although his teammates played a generally-solid game on defense behind Anderson, their two errors proved costly, accounting for three unearned runs.

The Patriot offense finally came alive in the sixth frame, producing two runs that sliced into the 5-0 Peabody lead. After Captain Jake D’Angelo walked and stole second, a base hit by sophomore catcher Hector Zavala (who was 3-for-3 on the day) delivered D’Angelo across the plate. A subsequent base hit by sophomore Nick Castellarian, who hit the ball hard throughout the game, brought around Zavala.

The Patriots’ previous contest was a 5-0 loss to Lynn English last Wednesday at Frazier Field. Senior captain Noah Jaynes tossed a five-hitter in a fine performance, but the Patriot offense, despite outhitting English, could not put up anything on the scoreboard. Zavala, D’Angelo, Castellarian, sophomore John DeSimone, junior captain Dan Murphy, and junior Matt Bonaventura all produced base hits.

“We seemed to start all of our rallies with two outs,” noted Brinkley. “We outhit them, but we couldn’t string our hits together.”

Brinkley and his crew, who now stand at 1-3 on the season, are set to play at Gloucester today and then will participate in the Chris Serino Tournament this weekend in East Boston. They will host Danvers Monday and travel to Marblehead Wednesday.
