Meeting on FlightCar Seeks Land in Revere Set for April 27

A San Francisco-based rental car company is planning on bringing a branch of its company to Revere. A public hearing regarding the application of a special permit will be held Monday evening, April 27 at 6 PM at the City Council meeting.

FlightCar, is a rental car service unlike others. FlightCar lets people parking at the airport rent their vehicle out to other approved traveling members. The company is looking to locate a branch at 85 American Legion Highway in Revere, also home of Comfort Inn Suites. Flightcar plans on having 10 vehicles available for lease on the property. Customers may take the MBTA to Logan Airport or the Comfort In shuttle, which is free for all customers.

The operation of a rental car service is allowed only by special permit within the Technology Enterprise District (TED) zoning district. The company now has 14 airport locations, according to Kevin Petrovic, one of the owners. The company is being represented locally by attorney James Cipoletta.

According to FlightCar, every rental is insured up to $1 million and every renter is pre-screened. Members get free parking, a car wash and you get paid if your car is rented out. The company promises the lowest rental rates, free insurance, free extras and no fees. It is also free to join.

The company has been featured on NBC, ABC’s 20/20 and NPR. Forbes Magazine touted the company as one of the hottest startups of 2013. Flightcar is a peer-to-peer car sharing facilitated by a third party. It is a brainchild of three Ivy League college friends who believe that having your car sit at an airport is a waste of money. Logan Airport and San Francisco were the first spots.
