MAYOR’S YOUTH SUMMER EMPLOYMENT PROGRAM

Today Mayor Rizzo announced that the Youth Summer Employment Program will have a drastic change going into the 2015 summer. Youth will be placed in departments across city government, including Public Works and Parks & Recreation, along with a new partnership involving the Chamber of Commerce.

The goal of the Youth Sumer Employment Program is to serve as a young person’s first job experience and exposure to the world of work. The program serves children and teens ages 14 to 21. The program is funded through the annual municipal budget along with grants from the Massachusetts Port Authority and YouthWorks.

The program will not be expanding in terms of the number youth employed but in the variety of jobs being offered. The program will be drastically changing in 2015 with youth being placed in over 15 departments across city government instead of the usual 2 to 4. . Local businesses will also be taking on youth and paying half of their salary through a new partnership with the City and the Chamber of Commerce.

Applications are available through Friday, May 1 at the Recreation Department located at 150 Beach Street or online at http://www.revere.org/departments/parks-and-recreation. Applications must be returned to the Recreation Department by noon on Friday, May 1.

“The new collaboration between the Chamber of Commerce, business community and the City of Revere on the summer jobs program is really exciting. Youth will now be able to gain meaningful work experience in any one of a number of businesses in Revere during the summer. We are hopeful that this exposure will help children as they move forward with their careers,” explained Revere Chamber of Commerce President Kerri Abrams.

“The youth summer jobs program, for many Revere children that participate, is their first work experience and because of that we have made strides this year to make improvements to the initiative. The partnership with the Chamber of Commerce, along with the expansion of the program to over a dozen city departments, will ensure that children receive a first in class work experience,” stated Mayor Rizzo.
