First 1: Joanne McKenna Pulls Papers for Ward One Seat

REVERE – Revere educator Joanne M. McKenna is the first candidate to have pullednomination papers for a special election to fill the Ward 1 Councillor seat left vacant by the late Richard A. Penta.

McKenna, who resides on Winthrop Avenue and has resided in Beachmont her entire life, has been an art teacher at Revere High School for over 30 years

She holds a bachelor’s degree in art education from the Massachusetts College of Art and a master’s degree in psychology from Lesley University. She has been president of the Beachmont Improvement Committee and started the Revere Beautification Committee. She said before Penta passed away they did talk and he expressed his support for her.

A special election will be held in Ward 1 on May 19 to fill a vacancy on the City Council left by the passing of Penta, who died Feb. 25 after a lengthy battle with cancer.

The cost for the Special Election is $8,850 including $3,500 for police coverage.

Nomination papers became available on Tuesday. Candidates must obtain 50 signatures from within the ward. Nomination papers must be returned by 5 pm Tuesday, April 7. Tuesday, April 14 will be the last day for the Board of Election Commissioners to certify the signatures on the nomination papers. April 16 is the last day to withdraw or object to a nomination for the special election.

April 29 by 8 pm is the last date and time to register to vote for the Special Election in Ward 1 on May 19. May 11 will be the last day for candidates on the ballot to file their campaign finance report. May 18 at noon is the last date and time to file an application for an absentee ballot for the Ward 1 Special Election.

The Special Election will be held from 7 am to 8 pm May 19.

The polling places for the Ward I election are: VFW Post 6712, 150 Bennington St., for Ward 1, Precinct 1; Liston Towers, 45 Dolphin Ave., for Ward 1, Precinct 2; and Revere Youth Center, 150 Beach St., for Ward 1, Precinct 3.
