RHS hockey team

wins one, ties two in

final week of season

The Revere High hockey team ended its season on an upbeat note with a win and two ties this past week.

“It’s always a goal that you want your team to be playing its best hockey in February, and that’s what we’ve been doing,” said RHS head coach Joe Ciccarello. “It’s too bad that we lost so many close games earlier in the year, because if we had taken some points in those games, we could have been contending for a place in the state tourney. We left a lot of points on the table and you can never get them back,” added the coach, referring to the seven games — more than a third of their schedule — that the Patriots lost by a goal earlier in the year.

The Patriots’ victory came against Northeastern Conference South Division rival  Swampscott, a team that had defeated Revere 2-1 in their first encounter this season and that will be playing in the state tourney.

A pair of goals by Joe Ristaino in the first and second periods, with Steve Noel and Rich Polignone assisting on both tallies, gave the Patriots a 2-1 lead after two frames. Polignone then lit the lamp with an empty-netter, assisted by an unselfish pass from Ristaino, for the insurance marker.

The Patriots earlier in the week had tied former Greater Boston League foe Medford, another tourney-bound team, 2-2, on Senior Night at Cronin Rink. Polignone deflected home a shot from the point by Dan Valente for the first Revere goal and Anthony Cecca scored the tying marker with 10 minutes to go, assisted by Jim Pandolfo. RHS netminder Maxx Anderson turned in another one of his stellar efforts, turning aside 55 Medford shots. The Patriot defense, while allowing shots from outside, did an outstanding job in clearing the puck from in front of Anderson and preventing Medford forwards from getting their sticks on rebounds.

The Patriots concluded their season at Lowell with a 4-4 tie. After falling behind 3-0, Revere stormed back with three unanswered tallies to knot matters at 3-3 after two periods.  Polignone, who put home a rebound of a shot from the point by Kevin Chiles; Noel, assisted by a nice pass from Polignone; and Cecca, who stuffed home a loose puck in front, took turns lighting the lamp for the Patriots.

Lowell took the lead to start the final period, by Ristaino, assisted by Noel, notched the equalizer for the 4-4 finale.

“This team was playing for nothing but pride,” said Ciccarello. “They gave it everything they had in the last three weeks of our season and I could not have asked for anything more from them.”
