Revere Defeats Lawrence, 72-53 in Tourney Opener

The Revere High School girls basketball team advanced in the State Tournament with an impressive 72-53 victory over Lawrence Tuesday night at the Roland Merullo Fieldhouse.

Senior captain Tiphani Harris led all scorers with 21 points. Junior guard Adanna Hector had 12 points, hitting all six of her free throws. Freshman center Valentina Pepic had 11 points while freshman guard Pamela Gonzalez contributed nine points. Junior captain Ally Hinojosa, junior guard Maritza Scott, and sophomore center Meaghan Gotham also excelled for Revere. The trio of Gotham, Harris, and Pepic helped Revere control the boards.

Revere led 30-26 before putting together a 16-0 run in the third quarter to build a 52-35 lead after three quarters. Lawrence closed the margin to 59-47 with 4:14 left but Harris and Hector hit key hoops and free throws to help Revere pull away and seal the victory.

Gonzalez, who’s gaining notice for her stellar play in her first varsity season, made a spectacular  basket to end the first half. After scrambling for a loose ball and winding up on the floor, Gonzalez attempted a shot in a sitting position and the tball went through the net as the buzzer sounded. Gonzalez’s unusual basket gave Revere a four-point lead at the half and appeared to take some momentum away from the Lancers. When Gotham hit the first hoop of the second half, followed by two baskets by Scott, and an offensive flurry by Harris and Gonzalez, the Lady Pats had built a commanding 50-32 lead.

The victory over Lawrence marked the final home game for four-year varsity standout Tiphani Harris.

Coach Diana DeCristoforo’s Lady Pats (17-4), champions of the Northeastern Conference North Division, will play Billerica (17-3) in the Division 1 North quarterfinals Saturday at 7 p.m. in Billerica.
