Parent Questions Teaching of Islam, Religions in World History at Revere Middle Schools

October 25, 2014
By

A flap over the history curriculum regarding world religions – specifically teachings about Islam – in the Revere middle schools has gone to the Boston media and caused a number of parents to ask questions and inquire about what is, indeed, being taught to children.

Superintendent Paul Dakin said the genesis of the complaint came from a parent at the Susan B. Anthony Middle School who objected to history classes taught to 6th, 7th and 8th graders. Dakin said the curriculum is a general overview of all world religions in the context of the study of history and has been taught in Revere since 2003.

“This is nothing new in the schools,” he said. “We’re not teaching religion and we’re not trying to convert any student. For people to think we’re out there selling religion is completely false. We’re discussing these things intelligently and academically. This is learning and this is information.”

The classes that tackle the topics include World Geography in grade 6, Ancient Civilization in grade 7 and World History I in grade 8. The teachings, also, are part of the state’s curriculum, he said.

The original complaint came from parent Anthony Giannino – a former Revere DPW worker – who objected to a general information piece about Islam. In particular, Giannino – who was interviewed by Channel 7 News in Boston – said there were things in the text that referred to Allah being the only God and Muhammad being his prophet.

“That’s insulting to me as a Christian who believes in Jesus only,” Giannino told Channel 7 in a segment on Monday night. “We don’t believe in Allah.”

The particular reference, in context, is buried within facts about there being 1.3 billion Muslims in the world and that the name Muhammad means “highly praised.”

Following those facts is the ‘Call to Prayer,’ which reads in the text as: “Allah is the greatest; I bear witness that there is no God but Allah; I bear witness that Muhammad is his Prophet; Hasten to prayer, hasten to success; Allah is the greatest. There is no God but Allah.”

Giannino told Channel 7 that he pulled his son from the classes because he didn’t want him exposed to teachings about Islam, and he said that resulted in his son failing the class.

“If my son was from another country and came here, he would have been catered to, but we’re no being catered to and they gave him an ‘F,’” he told Channel 7. “They should say to you ahead of time that in history your son is going to learn about Islam. They should send a letter home.”

Dakin said that Giannino is the first person to ever complaint about the 11-year-old curriculum. He said three parents have voiced concerns to his office after seeing the report on Channel 7, and all have been satisfied with the district’s explanation of the history curriculum.

He added that the Mayor’s Office and the School Department have been inundated with calls.

“Religions of all types are part of the discussion in history,” said Dakin. “You can’t discuss the move from B.C. to A.D. without talking about religion and Jesus. You can’t talk about the time before Christ without talking about Judaism. You have to talk about Buddhism and Hinduism and the religions of Native Americans to understand history in that part of the world and to understand the culture. We study it from that point of view and not to convert anyone. It’s information that’s put in context and academic. I don’t think history can be taught without discussing religions.”

Dakin said the classes also discuss Christianity, Jesus Christ, Judaism, Buddhism, the Puritan Movement and other religions in the same context as the Islamic faith.

He said he doesn’t believe one can remove religion from the academic study of history.

“Are we going to allow people to say they don’t like the Civil War and the South and the Confederates and won’t let their kids be in class every time we talk about the Confederates?” he asked. “We could never do that. They could never understand the history of the Civil War without talking about the South.”

That said, Dakin affirmed that any parent not wishing to have their children exposed to any teachings in the schools – including world religions within history classes – can have their children excluded from the discussion.

“Any parent can have their child held out of anything they don’t want them to be exposed to, but in this case, these are state standards and they will likely be tested on it,” he said. “If they’re asked about it on a standardized test, they won’t know it. Also, if they miss more than six classes, they will have a problem with attendance.”

Dakin and Christina Porter – Director of Humanities – sent out a letter to the specific concerned parents on Oct. 16 to address the objections and provide more information about the curriculum and the state standards.

On Tuesday, Dakin issued a memo to the entire district discussing the issue once again.

“More than the fact that we are following State Curriculum Standards is the fact that we live in a multicultural world and city, and each classroom in every school has children of multiple religions,” he wrote. “As part of our appreciation of our diversity, there are discussions about places where our children come from and the traditions they practice. We celebrate the differences we have.”

Does this history textbook contain the same detailed, complimentary info regarding Judaism, Christianity, Buddhism and Hinduism? If not, it is biased and BS. Really, it’s that simple! “Major Religions of the World” or NONE!!!!!

  • Cozmo the Magician

Did you bother to even READ the article? It would appear you did not. “Dakin said the curriculum is a general overview of all world religions in the context of the study of history and has been taught in Revere since 2003.”

  • OneMadMack

Yes, I did READ this piece as well as others. Have you found this informative text on other religions in the school curriculum? Have you? If so, would you be so kind as to share these examples with the rest of us?
If you do not have this information readily available, would you please get copies of the textbooks and copy and paste the info on the religions I mentioned? Get back to me when you’ve done all that, please.

  • Rose

Please provide a link to the actual study book or material, not just an overview of what the study covers. Why is it not told that Muhammad was ‘married’ to a 9 year old, was a sexual deviant, was a horse thief (among other criminal actions), spouts for killing anyone not Islamic, believes woman and girls less than males, etc.?
The information in the news story claims Muhammad tended herds, married a wealthy widow, saw his people being mistreated, etc., and leaves out the horror of islam. Why is the truth of islam not being told — is this to not upset muslims and so the message is candy-coated? If information is to be provided, let all of it be provided and not just ‘choice pieces’.

Islam is not a religion. It is a cult made to look like a religion by a lower level social and economic people who remain in the 7th century. Legitimizing it using a civics lesson is an abomination.

  • Matt S

Have you looked for it? Or do you just want to ask and pretend that not looking means it isn’t there?

    The
history and social studies standards for the state of Massachusetts are
available online. You likely won’t find textbooks printed online,
    because they cost money.

About 3 minutes of searching found this from Grade 7:
    7.8 Identify polytheism (the belief
that there are many gods) as the religious belief of the people in Mesopotamian
    civilizations. (H)

    7.21 Describe the monotheistic
    religion of the Israelites. (H)

    A. the belief that there is one God

    B. the Ten Commandments

    C. the emphasis on individual worth
    and personal responsibility

    D. the belief that all people must
adhere to the same moral obligations, whether ruler or ruled

    E. the Hebrew Bible (Old Testament)
as part of the history of early Israel.

    7.41 Describe the origins of
Christianity and its central features. (H)

    A. monotheism

    B. the belief in Jesus as the
Messiah and God’s son who redeemed humans from sin

    C. the concept of salvation

    D. belief in the Old and New
    Testament

    E. the lives and teachings of Jesus
    and Saint Paul

    F. the relationship of early Christians to officials of the
    Roman Empire

  • Matt S

Don’t forget the genocidal adventures of the Israelites.

  • Matt S

It’s unlikely that the textbook will be online for you to read. It’s a book sold for profit. Putting its text online for free would defeat that.

The Massachusetts history standards are freely available online for you to read, though.

  • Matt S

Should they teach that Mary was 14 when she was impregnated?

  • michael

these textbook arguements are usually pretty silly. everyone should study all the major religions of the world to better understand their stupidity. and given the current situation in the islamic world, it is even more important to understand islam and it’s fascist and violent leanings.

    http://www.memritv.org/
their religious delusions would be funny it wasn’t for the death that comes with them.

  • michael

lot aka lut and solomon are great prophets to the muslims. the 27th surah in the koran deals mostly with solomon. god supposedly gave him control of jinn. moses is also a great prophet to the muslims, so killing the old men, boys and non-virgin females is as islamic as it is jewish and christian. the old and the new testements are holy books to the muslims. they all share the same genocidal god.

  • michael

    all religions are cults.

  • OneMadMack

Is this another entertaining sideshow designed purely for entertainment purposes, offering nothing in the way of actual knowledge?
You’ve assumed, grasshopper. I have the textbooks and am encouraging closed minds to explore rather than slurp up whatever slop is fed that day. Your cute little list of bullet points found someplace on the internet do not answer the questions I posed. Perhaps some homework and honest inquiry rather than attempting to demean from a supposed place of supposed higher knowledge would serve all, well. Assumption serves only to make the assumer look foolish and underinformed.

  • JamesAmerican

The text book probably contains the same detailed information about all religions. We as Americans must uphold the right to teach such subjects. Islam is a religion of peace and is followed by billions of people around the world. A history class that omits Islam is not a real history class.

  • JamesAmerican

She was not 9 years old. She was 18 years old. You are mistaken. Horse thief? Arabia has camels. Horses are far and few. Again, you are mistaken. No one kills anyone. Stop making up horrors. You need to study Islam.

  • JamesAmerican

Islam is a religion. You should study Islam. Stop the hate.

  • michael

there are plenty of horses in Arabia, and have been since the time of Muhammad.

    (1) Narrated Abu Huraira: A man came to Allah’s Apostle and said, “Instruct me as to such a deed as equals Jihad (in reward).” He replied, “I do not find such a deed.” Then he added, “Can you, while the Muslim fighter is in the battle-field, enter your mosque to perform prayers without cease and fast and never break your fast?” The man said, “But who can do that?” Abu- Huraira added, “The Mujahid (i.e. Muslim fighter) is rewarded even for the footsteps of his horse while it wanders bout (for grazing) tied in a long rope.” (Book #52, Hadith #44)

there is even a hadith were Muhammad fell of his horse.
‘no on kills anyone’? what in the world are you talking about. Muhammad killed or ordered lots of people killed. and sometimes in a very gruesome manor.

  • michael

james, have you studied islam? do you know the hadd punishments? do you know the 4 major sunni madhabs?

  • James Bazza

That is your opinion, of which I do not share. As for “stop the hate,” I only hate murder, injustice, bearing false witness against their neighbors, those who keep silent when others practice evil, people who stone others because of “a sin” when they themselves are sinners themselves, making the innocent young, or mentally disabled carry suicide belts used in the murder of innocent people; and lastly murdering in the name of their god. These are the things that I find inhuman, evil and devilish. While people of many faiths do the above from time to time, today’s Muslims have been doing these things since they became an organized cult with not God-made, but man-made rules which are not holy rights, but decrees of men. When you and your kind put a stop to these behaviors, then you will not see me posting notes like you see here. Be peaceful and the world will follow you. Amen.

  • James Bazza

Michael: read my reply to James American. Do something different and learn what we all have learned.

  • Matt S

Somewhere on the internet being the Illinois Department of Education homepage listing of history and social studies. What precisely did you offer?

Which textbooks do you have? If you have them, then why are you asking the questions? You should have the answers right in front of you.

Of the two of us, I’m the only one who did any research, or at least, who shared the fruits of that research in this debate. As such, I appear far more informed than you.

  • Matt S

So, do you hate Christianity over the burning of witches and the torture of heretics. Do you hate Christianity over the beating and murder of gay people in Africa today?

  • Matt S

You should read up on the Islamic Golden Age. While Christians were in the Dark Ages, Muslims made major advances in mathematics, medicine, and the sciences. Their empire at the time was extremely tolerant of people of other religions.

Then fundamentalism took hold, something American’s Christians should read about and take notice of.

  • michael

i read your reply. so you, like the muslims, claim to know ‘god’s law’?
so what are the ‘holy rights’? the rights to keep slaves.

  • michael

why don’t you name a few of these major advances?
when it suits the muslims islam is tolerant. but when they have the upper hand it often suits them to wipeout other religions. see the pagan’s of the arabian penninsula. when taking mecca muhammad destroyed 360 pagan idols
the zoroastrians were driven out of persia by the muslims.

Narrated ‘Ikrima: Some Zanadiqa (atheists) were brought to ‘Ali and he burnt them. The news of this event, reached Ibn ‘Abbas who said, “If I had been in his place, I would not have burnt them, as Allah’s Apostle forbade it, saying, ‘Do not punish anybody with Allah’s punishment (fire).’ I would have killed them according to the statement of Allah’s Apostle, ‘Whoever changed his Islamic religion, then kill him.'”

  • michael

everyone should. do you? do you hate islam for it’s treatment of non-muslims? speaking of witches, you do realize that a person was beheaded in saudi arabia in august for sorcery.
    http://islamqa.info/en/13941
“Once it is proven that a person is guilty of practicing magic, then he must be killed.”

  • James Bazza

We don’t burn witches anymore. And if we did I would kill these people myself. What they are doing over in Africa (beating and murdering gay people) is THEIR version of Christianity. We don’t do that today – particularly worldwide (unlike Muslims that practice their terror worldwide) Nevertheless — all killing must stop no matter what the reason. Use your head Matt S — no one gets burned by being a witch today. That was 300 years ago. Christians in today’s world that are NOT in some timeworp do not practice such atrocities. I’m sure you can go on and on, but with respect to the Muslim cult — you guys have continually for more than 1,500 years have been killing each other, and killing other people. There is such a major difference that you can’t make you way out of that argument.

  • Matt S

I have anger for the culture dominant in so many majority Muslim nations that persecutes women and other religions and gay people. I am also angry at sects of Christianity that persecute women and other religions and gay people.

There is a difference between culture and religion. The religion of Islam is the same religion from the Islamic Golden age, a time of peace and prosperity, but the culture of people practicing it is radically different. Likewise, the Christian religion of the Inquisition and the witch burning is no different from the Christian religion practiced today or during the Enlightenment, but the two cultures who practiced Christianity are very different.

It’s the culture that’s the problem, not the religion.

  • James Bazza

Yadda Yadda Yadda yahh!. I am very familiar with history. You guys had a good thing going in math, medicine and science. But you didn’t know how to treat your own people. Further to that, then you guys went backward and started living in the desert scratching out an existence eating the local vermin. You had your time — and then you lost it (like the Roman empire). And when you speak of your people being tolerant of other people — how do you know. Because some towel head wrote it. You weren’t there — and everyone knows Arabs/Muslims NEVER tell the truth.

  • James Bazza

You are really stupid. Your towel is wrapped too tight on your small head. Take it off and give it some air. If I had the choice, I would only keep Muslim slaves personally. Stop the crap about “holy rights,” You do not have a god. Your boy Mohammed invented him when he was on crack. Get away from that club and try something else.

  • Matt S

Muhammad destroyed 360 pagan idols huh? Ever read the Old Testament? How many pagan idols did the Israelites destroy? How many pagan people did they invade and kill?

    As for some accomplishments:
In calculus, Alhazen discovered the sum formula for the fourth power, using a method readily generalizable to determine the sum for any integral power. He used this to find the volume of a paraboloid.

Ibn al-Nafis first showed that the blood in the ventricals of the heart does not mixed, the blood in one ventrical coming from the lungs and blood in the other having come from the body.

They used mercuric chloride to disinfect wounds.

In the Fatimid caliphate, Jews and Christians occupied high levels of government based on merit instead of heredity or religion. The region had tolerance for variety of thought and expression unparalleled at the time. It’s sad that such an attitude passed away to what is there now. We should all take a lesson from that.

  • Matt S

You guys? I’m British and Eastern European by ancestry, though some of my ancestors lived in the U.S. since colonial times. I’m not Muslim. I merely can appreciate a wise and tolerant culture beyond my own.

I’m not sure how you can trust any news or history that you weren’t there for James. I guess you just live according to your assumptions. Must be easy that way.

  • Matt S

No we don’t, but the Christianity then is the same as the Christianity now, same bible, same God, same Jesus, same rules. So, was Christianity evil then? If so, it must be evil now, because it hasn’t changed.

But I say it isn’t the religion that practices such evil, it’s the people and their culture. The culture today is very different from the culture then (though in some ways still not different enough.)

And again, I’m not a Muslim. I’m a Christian, by birth anyway. Though frankly, I’m not a fan of any of the religions. At best, their benevolent manipulations.

  • michael

it’s the religion that demands you kill a homosexual. it is the religion that makes things ‘sins’ and ‘crimes’. it is the religion that says to kill an apostate.
“It’s the culture that’s the problem, not the religion.” lol.
the religion is the main focus of islamic culture. christianity has been seperated from our cultural laws in america. we have established a seperation of religion and governance. islam says it know ‘god’s law’ and that it must be implimented. is not eating pork a culture thing? or an islamic one?
hell the koran says: 2:11 And when they are told, “Do not spread corruption on earth,” they answer, “We are but improving things!” 2:12 Oh, verily, it is they, they who are spreading corruption – but they perceive it not!*
*It would seem that this is an allusion to people who oppose any “intrusion” of religious considerations into the realm of practical affairs, and thus – often unwittingly, thinking that they are “but improving things” – contribute to the moral and social confusion referred to in the subsequent verse.

  • michael

yes, i’ve read the old testement. terrible collection of books. horrendous laws laid down in it. it’s often self contradictary and poorly written, much like the koran.
so you are saying it was ok for muhammad to destroy other people’s religious icons, because moses did it as well? strange stance to take, don’t you think?
“They used mercuric chloride to disinfect wounds.” that doesn’t sound good. bleach and mecury in a wound? that should disinfect? but it might poison you as well. and burn like a mother fucker. might as well just slap some iron on it.
yes algebra and and calculus were advancements made by muslims.
so jews and christians (people of the book) may have been treated well in some islamic empires. but why did muhammad himself destroy pagan idols? why are zoroastrians called ‘fire worshipers’? why did ali burn atheists to death?

  • michael

“unparalleled at the time”? you sure. so you know what the chinese where doing at the time the? the hindus? the plains indians? the incas, mayans, aztecs? the animist in sub-sahara africa?

  • michael

“Stop the crap about “holy rights,” You do not have a god.” lol. you are the one who claimed to know “holy rights”. yes, i have on god. that’s because i’m an atheist. no one has a god. there is no god.
“Your boy Mohammed” lmfao. muhammad can go fuck himself, along with your boy jesus.

  • michael

you’re a brit. here are some of your fellow brits. followers of ‘the religion of peace’.
    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=B_kyNIevsIs
we’ll take your wives as war booty guy cracks me up every time.

  • Muslim children not only need halal meat or Eid
Holidays but they need state funded Muslim schools with Muslim teachers as role
models during their development period also. There is no place for a non-Muslim
child or a teacher in a Muslim school. Legally, the state has an obligation to
respect the rights of parents to ensure that ‘education and teaching(of their
children) is in conformity with their own religious and philosophical
convictions.’ The schools must satisfy the spiritual, moral, social, and
cultural needs of Muslim pupils. State schools with non-Muslim monolingual
teachers are not in a position to satisfy their needs. A good school is not just
a knowledge factory or a conveyor belt for churning out exam passes – it is a
community, a family. A community is held together by common values and
    principles.

None of 7/7 bombers and British Muslim youths who
are in Syria and Iraq are the product of Muslim schools. They are the product of
British schooling which is the home of institutional racism with chicken racist
native teachers. It is absurd to believe that Muslim schools, Imams and Masajid
teach Muslim children anti-Semitic, homophobic and anti-western views. It is
dangerously deceptive and misleading to address text books and discuss them out
of their historical, cultural and linguistic context. It is not wrong to teach
children that Jews are committing the same cruelty in Palestine what German did
to them before or during Second World War. It is not wrong to teach children
that anti-social behaviour, drinking, drugs, homosexuality, sex before marriage,
teenage pregnancies and abortions are western values and Islam is against all
such sins. This does not mean that Muslim schools teach children to hate
    westerners, Jews and homosexuals.

The demand for Muslim schools comes from parents
who want their children a safe environment with an Islamic ethos. Parents see
Muslim schools where children can develop their Islamic Identity where they
won’t feel stigmatised for being Muslims and they can feel confident about their
faith. Muslim schools are working to try to create a bridge between communities.
There is a belief among ethnic minority parents that the British schooling does
not adequately address their cultural needs. Failing to meet this need could
result in feeling resentment among a group who already feel excluded. Setting up
Muslim school is a defensive response. State schools with monolingual teachers
are not capable to teach English to bilingual Muslim children. Bilingual
teachers are needed to teach English to such children along with their mother
tongue. According to a number of studies, a child will not learn a second
language if his first language is ignored.

The West has never been at ease with Islam since
the Crusades. It is unfortunate that huge oil supplies lie under the Arabian
Deserts. It is the West that stirred the trouble that led to 9/11. That attack
was a desperate act of by men prepared to lose their life. We need to get to
grips on who is the terrorist? On 24 November 1963, Lyndon Johnson said, “the
battle against communism… must be joined… with strength and determination. Some
three million lives were lost in the consequential battles. The US had to pull
out due to Public Opinion. Communism lived on. So who was the
    terrorist?

The British establishment is wrong in thinking that
Imams are to blame for extremism. Imams are not solution to the problem for
extremism. Extremism is nothing to do with Imams. Extremism is not created from
abroad, it is coming from within. Britain fails to help Muslim communities feel
part of British society. Race trouble is being predicted by the Daily Express,
because of an ethnic boom in UK major cities. Muslim communities need imams for
the solutions of their needs and demands in their own native languages. Muslim
parents would like to see their children well versed in Standard English and to
go for higher studies and research to serve humanity. The fact is that majority
of Muslim children leave schools with low grades because monolingual teachers
are not capable to teach Standard English to bilingual Muslim children. A Muslim
is a citizen of this tiny global village. He/she does not want to become
    notoriously monolingual Brit.

Terrorism and sexual grooming is nothing to do with
Masajid, Imams and Muslim schools. Those Muslim youths who have been involved in
terrorism and sexual grooming are the product of western education system which
makes a man stupid, selfish and corrupt. They find themselves cut off from their
cultural heritage, literature and poetry. They suffer from identity crises and I
    blame British schooling.

The shocking level of targeting of the Muslim
community of Birmingham is indicative of the normalisation of the dehumanisation
of the Muslims of Britain. Under the pretext of “extremism”, criminal
undemocratic and unethical abuse of public institutions and the Muslims of the
UK can occur without much accountability. This pervasive attitude, especially
amongst officials like Michael Gove needs to change. Our schools are truly
trying to develop our children to do well at schools so later in life they are
able to stand on their own two feet, but if we stop our schools from doing this
than our country will have up rise of unemployment, benefit issues, crime levels
high, I think its time for you apologize and allow practitioners to do their job
    right.

If this “man” is truly teaching diversity, then let him answer why they are not teaching these children to recite the Lord’s Prayer – the prayer of the ONE TRUE GOD of America and Christians – IF he is sincerely interested in teaching “diversity”.
    .
He isn’t teaching diversity – he’s pushing his islamic agenda and trying to indoctrinate our children. Period.

  • satanLOSES

Figures – Libs/Dems/muslims only do things that they can make a dollar off of.
    .
They are cowards – crooks, thieves, liars and anti-christs.
    .

  • satanLOSES

A “general” overview would be just that – “general”. It would NOT include making Christian children recite a blasphemous prayer to a false “god” who is working for satan.

  • satanLOSES

On the contrary, “islam” is the secular creation of yet another false “god” that satan has used to further dupe as many people as he can. i.e. joseph smith of the mormons, buddha, Ron Hubbard, etc.
    .
The one true God isn’t a “religion” – HE is God – and He will be returning oh so soon to destroy those who reject HIM and HIS Word (Holy Bible).
    .
The Good News is that there’s still time to repent and turn to the one true God – our Almighty Creator. Your choice. Choose wisely.
    🙂

  • satanLOSES

Making advances in “mathematics, medicine, and the sciences” won’t help you a bit once the one true GOD returns to claim His followers – and to destroy those who reject Him.
And the ONLY thing I “take notice” to is God’s Word – the Holy Bible.

  • satanLOSES

So you are saying that it’s okay and good to believe and believe in a “book” that a nation of people (secular mankind) wrote – instead of a book that the Holy Ghost inspired.
    .
    lol typical lib/dem/muslim logic.
