A deadly fire over the weekend on Campbell Avenue claimed the life of a Revere resident and left 35 people homeless.
George Maddox’s roommate described the terrifying scene inside their Campbell Avenue apartment as a fire ripped through the building.
The fire, which killed Maddox, 64, a Vietnam War veteran, gutted the four story, eight unit apartment building at 190 Campbell Ave. Saturday night at 9:30 p.m.
Arthur Fitzmeyer, also a Vietnam War veteran, recalled the frightening fire Monday and remembers yelling ‘fire’ to his roommate and ‘get up’ before the apartment was engulfed in smoke and flames.
Maddox and Fitzmeyer lived on the third floor and while Fitzmeyer’s was lucky enough to get out Maddox died in the blaze which left 35 people homeless.
Fire officials said the fire began in Maddox and Fitzmeyer’s apartment and quickly spread throughout the building.
Because there was a death as a result of the fire, the Suffolk County District Attorney’s office will conduct an investigation into its cause.
Suffolk County D.A. spokesman, Jake Wark, said the fire is under investigation but is not considered suspicious.
Revere Deputy Fire Chief James Cullen said the building was a total loss and the damage was estimated at $500,000. Maddox served in Vietnam at the age of 17 and was a medic during the war.
