Revere High junior Kevin Flaherty has qualified for the state tournament. Flaherty started out the season as the number two golfer for Coach Ron Ferullo’s squad, but improved dramatically to move into the top spot in the Patriot lineup and compile a sterling 6-2 record to qualify for the tourney.
The Revere High football team dropped a 28-7 decision to Peabody Friday evening. The Patriots now stand at 3-4 on the season and will be looking to get back to the .500 mark Saturday night at Harry Della Russo Stadium against Malden. Steve Bagnera connected with Marcus Johnson on an 83 yard fullback option pass for the Patriots’ lone score. Jose Escobar ran for 70 yards on the night for Revere.
The RHS cross country team finished at 6-2 on the season with a loss of 21-41 to Peabody in the season finale. All eight of the Patriot runners ran their fastest time of the season for coach Steve Pavey, led by senior Billy Melchionno, who came home in third spot in 15:51 over the 2.85 mile course. Teammate Ryan Burke was next in 16:02. Mike Nickerson in 16:38, Chris Porazzo in 16:46, and Joe Perrier in 18:14 rounded out the scoring for Revere.

The RHS field hockey team earned a 2-0 win over Peabody on goals by Nicole Smith and Brenda Della Russo.
Patriot golfers Rich Russo, Jimmy Mulligan, and Robert Anderson have been named to the GBL all star team.
Larry Matthews set a course record in 29:49 to win the recent Great Northern Manufacturing 10K Road Rae October 16. Proceeds from the race will benefit autistic children.
Jay Lally is the new President of Revere Little League.

Two-time defending GBL champion Medford defeated the Revere High football team 26-6 Saturday. Joe Laurano, who provided most of the Patriot offense rushing (51 yards on 13 carries) and pass receiving (nine catches for 147 yards), scored the lone Patriot touchdown.
40 years ago October 24, 1973
The Revere High football team led once again by All-Scholastic candidate Joe Festa, rolled past Malden, 34-0. Festa rushed for 165 on 14 carries and scored two touchdowns. He also intercepted a Malden pass and ran it back 46 yards for a TD. Tony Belmonte scored a TD from five yards out and Ted Ferrante added a touchdown late in the game. The Patriot defense also shone, limiting Malden to just 95 yards of total offense, led by Joe DiPlatzi and Mike DeGenova. Revere now stands at 5-0 on the season.
The Revere High cross country team remained undefeated with a 17-42 win over No. Quincy. Dom Finelli set a new course record in 12:11, breaking the old mark of 12:14 set earlier this year by teammate Colin Doherty. Doherty came in after Finelli in 12:37 and Patriot Mark McCarthy was next in 12:44.

After spotting Lynn Classical a 6-0 lead, the Revere High football team roared back to earn a smashing 31-6 victory and remain atop the Class B rankings with a perfect record. RHS quarterback Jim DelGaizo enjoyed another fine afternoon with three touchdown passes, tow to Vic Mancini and one to Alan Drover. John Fox and Paul Nuell scored on rushing touchdowns for Revere.
The Immaculate Conception High football team defeated St. Clement’s 14-0 Sunday. Bob Feerick tallied both touchdowns for IC on shot runs up the middle.
70 years ago October 28, 1943
The RHS football team earned a 7-7 tie with the team from Nashua, N.H. Doyle scored the Revere touchdown on a 77 yard interception return in the first quarter. Coach Kinneally’s boys now will travel to Somerville for this week’s contest.
The Immaculate Concepcion High football team defeated Keith Academy 13-0 Saturday. Sweeney plunged over for the first score and Rabbitt tossed a 48 yard pass to Jim Harrington for the second touchdown.
RHS Sports Roundup:RHS football team defeats Peabody
A new look with a new attack and a staunch defense proved to be the winning combination for the Revere High football team in a 23-13 triumph over Peabody Friday evening under the lights at Harry Della Russo Stadium.
The Patriots, who had shown flashes of brilliance on occasion throughout the season only to come out on the short end of its first five contests, finally put it all together against a favored Peabody squad before an appreciative hometown crowd at HDR on a picture-perfect night for high school football.
The “new look” Revere offense featured captain Tom Portrait at quarterback (instead of his usual running back slot) and a spread formation that clearly had Peabody befuddled throughout the entire first half.
The Revere offense, with Portrait at the helm, sliced through the Peabody defense as if it were papier mache en route to building a 17-0 lead at the half.
The Patriot defense was equally as awesome (which is not an overstatement in today’s youthful lingo), holding the visiting Tanners to just 36 total yards in the first two periods.
“We played a complete, all-around game,” said RHS head coach Lou Cicatelli. “We knew we had to do something to turn our season around and so we held a practice for three hours last Sunday to install the new offense. What we did clearly caught Peabody by surprise; they didn’t know what hit them.”
Portrait enjoyed a prolific night in his first game as RHS signal caller, completing 10 of 15 passes for 160 yards and rushing for another 105 yards. “Tommy is a super athlete with great, natural instincts. He stepped right in as if he’d always been playing the position,” said Cicatelli.
Teammate Kaleb Silva turned in a monster night on offense thanks to his rushing, receiving, and kick-return production. The junior scored all three of the Patriot touchdowns on pass receptions of 20 and 30 yards in the first half and a rushing touchdown of 25 yards late in the game to seal the Patriot victory. Kaleb’s total offense production was in the range of 200 yards.
Steve Selevitch accounted for the remainder of the Revere points with two successful kicks for PATs and a 35 yard field goal with moments left in the first half. Selevitch and David Castro also were prime receivers for Portrait, with both making key receptions during the Patriot scoring drives.
One of the most important Patriot drives of the evening came to start the second half. Although the Revere offense did not score on its first possession after the intermission, the Patriots chewed up almost the entire third period with a foray deep into Peabody territory. Controlling the ball for that length of time all but eliminated the possibility of a Peabody comeback.
Still, the Tanners made a game of it with a pair of touchdowns in the latter part of the game, one of which was aided by a Revere fumble on a punt at midfield. But another long Revere drive late in the game, culminated by Silva’s third TD of the evening, sealed the deal for Cicatelli’s crew.
The Revere defense, led by the likes of Ed Volcimus, Brian McNitt, Selevitch, and Silva, was immense in the opening half and applied the finishing touches late in the game, with an interception by Silva thwarting any hopes of a comeback by Peabody. “This was our best defensive effort of the season,” noted Cicatelli. “We played well throughout the game and I can’t say enough about how well we played.”
The win breathes some life into the Patriots’ bid to qualify for the playoffs under the new MIAA football set-up. Revere can still get into the post-season with a victory this week over Lynn Classical in another Friday Nights Lights affair at Harry DR at 7:00.
“I’m very proud of every boy on this team,” said Cicatelli. “It would have been easy for us to pack it in after our poor start, but we showed a great deal of resilience and now we’re very excited to have a chance to make the playoffs.”
Soccer team moves closer to NEC title
The Revere High boys soccer team took a pair of giant steps toward the first-ever league championship in the history of the boys program with a tie and a win against the other top two teams in the Northeastern Conference, Peabody and Lynn Classical, this past week.
The Patriots partly avenged their lone NEC loss, which took place at the hands of Peabody in the season-opener, with a 1-1 standoff against the Tanners last week. Sophomore Jose Soriano notched the Revere goal to tie the game with 15 minutes to play. Tarik Maddrey earned the assist, delivering a nice crossing pass from the right side to Jose, who was at the top of the box.
A few days later, Revere topped its closest rival in the NEC North Division, second place Lynn Classical, with a 2-0 victory. Saad El Khiam reached the back of the Classical net both times, assisted by teammates Galo and Ruben Soares. Jesus Landaverde earned the shutout with some fine saves in the goal.
“It’s nice to be in first place at this stage of the season, but I told the team that our work has only just begun,” said first year RHS head coach Abdel Rhazi. “We still need to finish our season strong if we are to be the champions.”
The Patriots, who stand at 8-2-3 overall (but who have only one loss in the NEC), were set to play Salem this past Monday, trek to Beverly today (Wednesday), and wrap up their 2013 campaign Friday at home against Lynn English.
RHS volleyball team defeats Danvers
The Revere High volleyball team, which already has clinched a berth in the post-season MIAA state tournament, defeated Danvers 3-1 last Tuesday. Coach Jaime Imbracsio’s squad won the firs two games, 25-18 and 25-14, dropped the third, 25-18, but then came back to win the fourth, 25-14.
Among the individual highlights for the Lady Patriots were Shannon Spillane with three kills and six aces and Raela O’Donnell with six aces.
On Friday, Revere dropped a 3-0 decision to Lynn Classical. “It was a rough game for us,” said Imbracsio. “We couldn’t pull a win together, losing each game by a few points.”
Imbracsio and her squad, who stand at 11-5 on the season, were set to face Peabody at home Monday; travel to Lynn English today (Wednesday); enjoy Senior Night festivities Friday against Winthrop; and then play their last regular season game Monday at Medford.
Girls run well  against Peabody
Although the Revere High girls cross country team came out on the short end of their meet last Tuesday against perennial league power Peabody, RHS head coach Katie Sinnott was pleased with her team’s performance.
“Peabody is always a powerhouse in the league and has an extremely deep and strong team,” said Sinnott. “Though we lost, the girls pushed the Peabody girls to race harder than they had wanted.”
Sinnott cited the performance of Suellen Guerriero, who ran a personal best and finished well ahead of teammates who had been running faster than her at the beginning of the season. “Suellen is showing great promise as a runner,” noted Sinnott.
Also setting personal record (PR) race paces were sophomore Jessica Ventura, freshman Nicole Paddock, and freshman Emily Brawley. Emily once again was the most improved runner from her most recent race.
Sinnott and her squad will compete in the Northeastern Conference All-League meet Saturday at Bradley Palmer State Park in Topsfield.

Boys cross country  races Salem, Peabody
The Revere High boys cross country team took on Northeastern Conference rivals Salem and Peabody in the past two weeks. The Patriots were missing their captain and top runner, John Della Russo, in the Salem meet in which the Pats fell by a score of 18-42.
However, freshman Sebastian Mejia stepped up to fill the breach and was the first Patriot across the line in third place in 18:08. Teammate and captain Jay Mistri, who was battling a cold, was the next Revere runner in eighth place in a time of 18:08.
Bounlaing Chea finished in ninth spot in 19:12, Christ Gentry was 10th in 19:37, and Ahmed Oualdzenagui was 12th in a clocking of 20:28 to complete the Revere scoring.
Other Patriots who competed were Vinicio Baez in a time of 22:09, John Erazo in 22:14, Dominic Giangregorio in 23:00, and Alex DeRosa in 25:12.
“Salem has one of its strongest teams in quite a while and we really missed John,” said RHS head coach Mike Flynn. “But the boys ran well and I was pleased with their overall effort.”
Last Tuesday, the Patriots ran up against perennial cross country power Peabody. Dello Russo was back in the lineup and turned in a personal record on the local course with a clocking of 16:53, good for fourth place. Fellow captain Mistri, back in full health, ran 30 seconds faster than the previous week to finish in 18:34. Mejia came home in 18:48, followed by Chea in 19:08, Erazo in 20:20, Giangregorio in 22:01, DeRosa in 24:21, Jeremy Delgado in 24:24, and freshman Dylan LeClair, running in is first race, in 30:29.
With their 2013 dual meet season now concluded, the Patriots will compete in the All-NEC Meet Saturday morning at Bradley Palmer State Park in Topsfield.
“We’re looking forward to the NEC Meet,” said Flynn. “The team has been improving each week and we’re hoping to pull ahead of some of the teams we’ve met this season.”
RHS golf team wraps up season
The Revere High golf team concluded its 2013 season with some impressive personal performances over the past two weeks.
In a match with Lynn Classical, Cam O’Neil, playing in the number eight slot in the RHS lineup, defeated his Classical counterpart, 6-3. Maxx Anderson and Brett Deukmejian at Nos. 5 and 6 both won, 5.5-3.5. Gennaro Cataldo tied in the No. 3
In a contest the following day against the Northeastern Conference champion Beverly squad, Kingston had an impressive win in the No. 2 spot, beating Beverly’s conference all-star, 5-4. O’Neil halved his match with his Beverly counterpart, 4.5-4.5.
In a contest with Winthrop, Jay Seigal had his first win as Revere’s number one golfer, defeating Winthrop’s top player, 5.5-3.5.
In a match with Malden Catholic of the Catholic Conference, which featured Revere’s only contest of the year in which score was kept by stroke play, Seigal, Kingston, Brett Deukmejian, and O’Neil turned in cards of under-50 for their rounds. When the final scores were tallied, MC edged the Patriots 255-263.
Revere finished its season at Bass Rocks Country Club in Gloucester. The Patriots played well, but came out on the short end of a 41-31 decision. Revere received solid performances from Seigal and Gennaro Cataldo, both of whom won their matches. Deukmejian, David Sinatra, and O’Neil all played well, but came up a hole short, falling 4-5 to their individual Gloucester rivals.
“We are losing five key seniors, Jay Seigal, Jeff Kingston, Brett Deukmejian, Gennaro Cataldo, and Alejandro Rojas, who have been a part of the program for four years,” said RHS head coach Matt Nazzaro. “I had a great time teaching these kids the game and the life lessons that go along with it. I want to thank them for all their efforts. My young golfers learned from them and know what it takes to be successful in the future. They will be surely missed.
“But we will have eight young and enthusiastic players returning who were all able to get varsity level competition this year,” continued the coach. “They fell in love with the game and are ready to put in the work needed to be competitive next year.”
Successful Alumni Day for RHS field hockey
The Revere High field hockey program held a successful Alumni Game Sunday in which the current RHS players took on their alumni counterparts.
“The 20th annual alumni game went really well,” said RHS head coach Erin Parker. “We had 15 alumni and three of the four Revere coaches (including myself). We had a player from the original team (graduated in 1977) as well as recent graduates. It was a great day that really displayed the tradition and love of field hockey at the high school. I felt honored to be part of it and was happy that the alumni have an opportunity to feel connected to RHS field hockey.”
In games played this past week, the Lady Patriots played well, but dropped close contests to Marblehead, 3-0, and Peabody, 2-0.
