Joseph Caggiano

Retired Boston Police Detective

Det. Joseph E. Caggiano, B.P.D. (retired) died at the Massachusetts General Hospital on September 20. He was 89 years old.

Born in Boston, the dear son of the late Grace (Ferrara) and Ernest P. Caggiano, he lived in Winthrop prior to entering the US Navy in World War II.

He was a graduate of Boston English High School and attended the Merchant Marine Academy on Gallups Island. While in the Navy he served on an escort vessel on the convoys to Mermansk in Russia. He was discharged from the Navy and attended the New England Institute of Embalming & Funeral Directing. Upon graduation, he was a licensed Funeral Director working with his father in the family funeral home.

He was called back into the US Navy during the Korean Conflict. While in the Navy, he was appointed to the Boston Police Department and served in South Boston for 32 years and for many years was a Detective and Juvenile Officer.

He was a member of the Knights of Columbus, the Disabled American Veterans and the Police Post American Legion.

He was the beloved husband of the late Anna O. (Bellio) Caggiano, the devoted father of Joanne Caggiano, Janice Erlandson and her husband, Rick and John Caggiano and his wife, Madeline, all of East Boston;  the loving brother of Marie G. Mann of Bedford, Frances T. Driscoll of Wellfleet and Ernest C. Caggiano and his wife, Nettie of Winthrop. He is also survived by his grandchildren Amy, Elizabeth Taylor and Joseph.

Rosalie Shea

Of Revere, formerly of Winthrop and East Boston

Rosalie M. (Scaramozzino) Shea of Revere, formerly of Winthrop, died at home on September 19 after a long illness. She was 71 years old.

Born in Boston, she was the beloved daughter of Esther (Perry) and the late Anthony Scaramozzino. She resided in East Boston in her early years before moving to Winthrop in 1965.

She was the devoted wife of the late Daniel J. Shea and the loving mother of John Shea of Connecticut, Patricia Lazzari and her husband, William of Revere, Daniel Shea of Saugus, Laurie Shea and Lawrence Hazard of Connecticut and Christopher Shea and his wife, Gayle of Saugus; the dear sister of Rita Beaton and Linda Niles, both of Saugus and the cherished grandmother of Jessica, Danielle, Michael, Makenzie, Carly, Daniel, Sophia and Ryan. She is also survived by two great grandchildren Skylar and Matthew.

Carmela Mulone

Baked the Pies and Desserts at Winthrop Arms for Many Years

Carmela Mulone of Wheelock Street, Winthrop died at home surrounded by her loving family on September 21, after a long illness. She was 81 years old.

Born in Insernia, Italy, she was the daughter of the late Letizia (DeFalco) and Domenic Iannone. She came to this country at an early age, residing in Winthrop for over 66 years. For many years she baked the pies and desserts at the Winthrop Arms.

She was the devoted wife of the late Natale Mulone and the loving mother of Anita Flintoff and her husband, Stephen of Winthrop, Frank Mulone and his wife, Dorothy of Winthrop, Domenic Mulone of Revere and Lisa Desmond and her husband, Mark of Winthrop; dear sister of the late Josephine Piacente. She was the cherished grandmother of Melissa, Angela, Michelle, Frank, Anthony, Jamie, Shannon, Nicole and Emily and is also survived by one great grandson, Brody.
Her funeral will be conducted by the Ernest P. Caggiano and Son-O’Maley Funeral Home, Winthrop today, Wednesday, September 26 followed by a funeral mass in St. John the Evangelist Church. Burial will follow the Mass in the Cross Street section of Winthrop Cemetery.

Elba Anne Piscione

Of Chelmsford, Formerly of Revere

Elba Anne (D’Epifanio) Piscione of Chelmsford, formerly of Revere, died peaceably on September 16 surrounded by her loving family.  She was 92 years old and joins her husband, William, of 49 years who died in 1996.

Among her the many activities she most enjoyed were weekends at the lake with her family and friends.

She is survived by her son, William Piscione, and his wife, Claire of N. Chelmsford and her daughter, Judith Palmer and her husband, David of Andover.  She is also survived by her niece Jean Lake and nephew Albert Balboni and his wife, Lorraine, and Richard and Dawn Gammack, as well as her grandchildren;  Michelle Charette and her husband, Nathan and Christopher Piscione, and six great grandchildren;  Savannah, Dakota, Nathan, Sophia, Audrey and Comille.  She also leaves behind many grand and great nieces and nephews.

Michael Leary

Died Recently

Michael R. Leary died on September 21.

He was the beloved son of David Leary and Christine (Scialoia); loving boyfriend of Claire D’Anna of Somerville; brother of David of Everett, Brian of Revere, and Heidi and Holly, both of Texas; grandson of Carmella Scialoia of Everett and is also survived by many nieces and nephews.

Ernest Rizzo, Sr.

Former Proprietor of Ernie’s Pizza & Take Out Service

Ernest M. Rizzo, Sr. of Revere died on September 22  after a brief illness. He was 94 years old.

The former proprietor of Ernie’s Pizza & Take-Out Service of Mountain Avenue, Revere, he was the beloved husband of 70 years to Margaret (Nazzaro) Rizzo.

Gloria (Coscia) Gazo of Peabody died on September 21. She was 81 years old.

Born in Revere and a retired bookkeeper, she was the beloved wife of Joseph C. Gazo of Peabody; dear sister of Danny Coscia and his wife Marie, Robert Coscia and his wife, Frances, Richard Coscia and his wife, Scarlett, Carmella Coscia and twin sister of Gilda B. Coscia, all of Revere and the late Josephine Reppucci, Jenny Anzouni, Joseph, Eugene, Phyllis, Phillip and Anthony Coscia. She is also survived by many loving nieces and nephews, great-nieces and great nephews, and great-great nieces and great great nephews.

Denise Jane Robitel

New Hampshire Resident

Denise Jane (McCarrick) Robitel of Moultonborough, NH, died unexpectedly on September 17.

She was the daughter of the late Dennis J. and Sylvia B. (McDonough) McCarrick; devoted mother of Roy J. Robitel and his wife, Merri A. Robitel of Revere; cherished grandmother of Adam J. Robitel of Santa Monica, CA and Nicole A. Robitel of Revere; dear sister of Robert A. McCarrick and his wife, Eleanor of Stoneham, formerly of Revere; dear aunt of Andrew McCarrick and his wife, Suzanne of Scottsdale, AZ, Nancy Hurley and her husband, Brian of Wayland, John McCarrick and his wife, Nancy of Boston and Susan Sansone of Stoneham. Jay Marie Palermo

Jay Marie Palermo of Salem, formerly of Revere, died at home on September 19 following a long illness.

She was raised and educated in Revere and was a graduate of Revere High School and UMass Amherst.

Her career began in statistical consulting for various companies including Digital where she and her husband met. She later pursued a Master’s Degree in Education at Boston University and taught math at Hopkington High School until becoming ill.

A person of strong religious beliefs, she was drawn to Salem by its heritage and culture and she also enjoyed the benefit of being closer to her parents and family.

A devoted and active mother, she was very involved in her children’s lives, encouraging both their musical and athletic pursuits. More recently, she was a strong advocate for the American Cancer Society.

She was the devoted wife of James J. Barton, the daughter of Elsie (Pasquale) Palermo and the late Joseph Palermo,  the loving mother of Michael James and Robert Kenneth Barton of Salem; sister of Paul Palermo and his wife, Tina of Tewksbury and Edward Palermo and his wife, Linda of Wilmington and several nieces and nephews.

James Murphy

Owned and Operated Murphy Insurance Agency

James J. Murphy, formerly of Revere, died in Fremont, NH on September 15. He was 92 years old.

“Jim” owned and operated the Murphy Insurance Agency on Beach Street, Revere, for over 40 years before retirement. Both he and his late wife, Agnes, were devotees of the Immaculate Conception Parish of Revere and the former St. Theresa’s Parish of Revere. He was a US Navy veteran of World War II and the recipient of the Purple Heart.

He was the beloved husband of the late Agnes M. (Dillon); dear brother of the late Fred Murphy, Mabel O’Donnell, Ambrose “Terry” and John Murphy and Grace Callina; cherished uncle to Paul Callina, Jr. and his wife, Patricia and Mary Ann Nicosia and her husband, Jack, all of Raymond, NH, Fred Murphy, Jr. of California, Timothy Murphy and Deborah Murphy-Carpenter, both of Florida. He is also lovingly survived by four grandnephews, Jamison Nicosia of Massachusetts, Thomas Nicosia of New Hampshire and Justin and Martin Callina, both of California.

Evelyn T. (Katz) Nydon of Natick, formerly of Revere and Brookline, died on September 14.

She was the beloved wife of the late Henry H. Nydon; devoted mother of Judith A. Nydon of Amherst and Audrey I. Nydon-Rice of Natick; cherished grandmother of Alyssa Ruiz and her husband, Mike, Greta Biagi and her husband, Damian; great grandmother of Michael Ruiz and Chiara Biagi and loving sister of Pearl Appelbaum of California and the late Harry Katz of Malden.

Phyllis Calsimitto

Of Winthrop, formerly of East Boston

Phyllis (Ciampa) Calsimitto of Winthrop, formerly of East Bosotn, died on September 18. She was in her 100th year.

The wife of the late Paul Calsimitto with whom she shared 66 years of marriage, she was the mother of Patricia Naso and her husband, Nicholas, Marie Calsimitto (Heres) Paul Calsimitto, Jr. and Dr. Donna Calsimitto and her husband, Ralph Bravocco. She was the grandmother of 11 and the late Paul Heres and also leaves 19 great grandchildren.

Francis Anthony DeMauro

Of Florida, formerly of Revere

Francis Anthony ‘Frank’ DeMauro of Florida, formerly of Revere and Peabody, died peacefully on September 15 surrounded by his family on his 87th birthday.

A graduate of Revere High School, Class of 1943, where he played football, after graduation he enlisted in the US Navy and served on the aircraft carrier USS Ranger for four years during World War II. He was the Master at Arms and crossed the Arctic Circle on October 3, 1943. Upon leaving the navy, he played semi-professional football.

He met his beloved wife of 62 years, Claire (Munroe) DeMauro in 1948 and they were married on September 16, 1950. He served as an MDC police officer for 14 years and then became the Supervisor of Attendance for the City of Peabody in 1967. He and Claire moved to Florida when he retired in 1990.

He loved his thoroughbred race horses, football, The New England Patriots, playing poker, singing Italian songs, dinners with his family and friends and, of course, he loved cigars.

In addition to his loving wife, he leaves his daughters, Elizabeth (Amero) and her husband, Daniel of Rockledge, Florida, Jennifer (Cronin) and her husband, Philip of Salem and Anna (St. Pierre) and her husband, Keith of Cocoa, Florida and one son, Vincent DeMauro of Saugus. He was “Papa” to seven grandchildren, Jeremy and his wife, Lisa Cronin, Maria Cronin, Jillian (Amero) Graham and her husband, Kevin, Alexis (Amero) Corson and her husband, Ben, Jenna (DeMauro) Bullis and her husband, Justin, Frank DeMauro and Brenna St. Pierre. He also leaves seven great grandchildren, Atley, Keats and Sophia Corson, MacKenzie and Seamus Cronin and Liam and Daniel Graham.

He is survived by his sister, Jean Allain and her husband, James of Naples, Florida and his brothers Edward and his wife, Monica and Robert and his wife, Kay, all of Revere; sister in law, Anita ‘Connie’ DeMauro of Peabody and by many loved nieces,  nephews and dear friends.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Vincent and Johanna (Chiota) of Revere and his brothers, Anthony (and wife, Pat) of Saugus, James of Peabody and Richard (and wife, Louise) of Saugus and by an infant son, Francis Anthony.

He was a wonderful man, a loving husband and father and a loyal and helpful friend to all. Our hearts are broken, he is sadly missed.

Virginia Korzeniowski

Retired Postal Clerk

Virginia M. (Clark) Korzeniowski, a 39-year resident of Revere, formerly of Chelsea, died at her daughter’s home in North Andover surrounded by her loving family on September 17 after a short illness.

Educated in Chelsea Public Schools, she was a graduate of Chelsea High School, Class of 1943 and retired as a US Postal Service Clerk in 1990 after 23 years of dedicated service.

She was the beloved wife of Edward P. Korzeniowski; devoted mother of Paul K. and his wife, Clare (DiGiovanni) Korzeniowski of Sudbury, Joyce and her husband, Anthony Arrigo of North Andover and Diane J. Korzeniowski of Revere; sister of the late Doris White, Mildred Comeau and Thelma Stone. She is also lovingly survived by five grandchildren: Christine M. Arrigo of Medford, Anthony E. Arrigo of Boston, Edward J. P. Arrigo of North Andover, David E. Korzeniowski and Mary B. Korzeniowski, both of Sudbury.

John Victor Di Rienzo

Of Revere, formerly of East Boston

John Victor Di Rienzo of Revere, formerly of East Boston, died on September 18. He was 83 years old.

A US Navy veteran attached to the Seabees, he was a member of St. Francis Council Knights of Columbus, a graduate of English High School, Class of 1946 and the recipient of the Lawrence Memorial Prize for excellence in academics. He also held a Civil Engineering Degree from Northeastern University and was a 65 year member of the Bricklayers Union Local 3 of Boston.

The cherished son of the late Antonio and Concetta (Salierno) Di Rienzo, he was the loving brother of Alfred Di Rienzo and his wife, Martha of Maryland and the late Felix Di Rienzo and Rita Cauble; fond uncle of eight nieces and four nephews.

John Chiaradonna, Jr.

Former Proprietor of JC Fence Co.

John H. Chiaradonna, Jr. of Peabody died unexpectedly following a long 12 year battle with a brain injury sustained in an automobile accident. He was 50 years old.

Born in Revere, he was raised and educated in Chelsea and was a graduate of Chelsea High School, Class of 1980.

He was the beloved husband of Mary A. (Flynn) for more 25 years. The couple moved to Peabody 23 years ago and John owned and operated JC Fence Co. of Chelsea and Peabody for about 10 years until a tragic auto accident 12 years ago ended his working career. He miraculously survived the auto accident but sustained a substantial brain injury. The last 12 years have been a very long and difficult battle with surgeries, therapies etc. He spent eight years at his parent’s home in Chester, NH and the last three years at an assisted living facility in Manchester, NH.

He was the beloved son of John H. Chiaradonna, Sr. Chelsea Fire Department retiree and the late June (Davey) of Chester, NH; devoted father of Matthew J. Chiaradonna and his wife, Natalia of Middleton, Amanda M. Chiaradonna and her fiancé, Wade A. Johnson of Ipswich and Alyssa G. Jackson and her husband, Thomas of Peabody; dear brother of: Cheryl L. Dale and her husband, Christopher of Derry, NH, Mary K. Ramsey and her husband, Michael of Epsom, NH and is also lovingly survived by his father and mother in law, Keith A. and Marie F. (Simone) Flynn of Peabody. He was the uncle of: Caitlin M., Christopher C. and Bridget D. Dale, all of Derry, NH and is also lovingly survived by several aunts, uncles and cousins.

Barbara Crowell

Lifelong Chelsea Resident

Barbara E. (Smith) Crowell, a lifelong resident of Chelsea, died peacefully at her home on September 12 after an extended illness. She was 73 years old..

As a young girl, she attended St. Rose Elementary School and remained an active parishioner at St. Rose Church  until the time of her passing. She attended Chelsea High school and was a good athlete. She played with the City’s Park leagues and also was an avid Boston sports fan.

Mrs. Crowell worked at several Chelsea factories over the years: Smithcraft Lighting, Leonard/Towle Silver, Town and Country Jewelers and American Optical, She also worked at the Y.M.C.A. and donated time at St. Rose School.

Later in life, she provided superb care to her parents in there elder years and most recently to her deceased and loving husband, Gordie who passed away in July of 2011. She had an endearing love for all who knew her and she adored Elvis Presley, visiting Graceland, attending many tribute shows and also liked shows at Foxwoods and Mohegan Sun.

She was the wife of the late Gordon Crowell; beloved sister of Richard Smith Chelsea 9-1-1 Dispatcher of Revere, Patricia Aniello and her husband, Joe of New Hampshire; daughter of the late Chelsea Police Det. Sgt. Joseph  B. Smith and Teresa (Francis) Smith and dear aunt of Julie Aniello of Medford, Noelle Smith of Revere, Joseph ANiello of Florida, Mark Aniello of New Hampshire and Steven DeLeo, Jr. of Medford and to many nieces and nephews in the United States and Nova Scotia, Canada.

Beverly Ege

Retired Citizens Bank Vice President, Active in Many Organizations

Beverly A. (Roberts) Ege died at the Massachusetts General Hospital in Boston on September 19 surrounded by her loving family. She was 73 years old.

Born in Boston, the daughter of the late Alfred and Ethel (Wells) Roberts, she graduated from Chelsea High School in 1957 and later settled in Revere with her loving husband, James A. Ege.  She and James’ 50th wedding anniversary was remembered on September 22.

Beverly retired from Citizens Bank as the Vice President. She was the former owner of Curly’s Restaurant in Chelsea and a Team Leader at the Target Corp.

She was also very active in many clubs and organizations. She was a member of the Revere Chamber of Commerce, the Revere Rotary Club and the Past President of the Zonta International Club of Chelsea. She was the Treasurer and active member of the Standing Committee at the First Baptist Church in Revere.
The devoted mother of Thomas Ege, Denise Martin and Annmarie Ege, she was the dear sister of Flora Hall and the late Evelyn Corbett, William Reddick, and Earl Reddick; beloved grandmother of Erin, Emily and Samantha Martin and is also lovingly survived by many nieces and nephews.
