Sand-Tastic Underway 9th Annual Event this Weekend

Sandsculptors were already working like busy bees Monday morning at Revere Beach in preparation
for this week’s 9th annual festival. Several sculptors are shown doing their part to create a giant sand tribute to Fenway Park on the occasion of the ballpark’s 100th birthday this year.

Under a microscope, grains of sand appear unique, colorful and majestic pieces of natural art.

And they’re even more stunning when billions of those grains are corralled by professional sand sculptors and formed into amazing works of sculpture.

That’s exactly what’s happening right now as the 9th Annual Revere Beach National Sand Sculpting Festival has kicked off, with a dozen or more professional sculptors already putting the finishing touches on the centerpiece sculpture – which is a fitting tribute to the 100th birthday of Fenway Park.

The Fenway Tribute features the Green Monster, Wally the Mascot and a number of other surprises that will dazzle Red Sox fans big and small.

On Thursday morning, the actual professional competition will begin.

Sculptors will work on their individual creations through Thursday, Friday and most of Saturday.

Judging for the competition will take place on Saturday at 3:30 p.m.

Fireworks will be shot off at 9:15 p.m. on Saturday.

Thursday night will feature an Opening Ceremony, and there will be exhibition tents, food, kiddie rides and sandcastle lessons for kids.

“On behalf of the Revere Beach Partnership, we hope you will join us for the 9th Annual National Sand Sculpting Festival, our marquee event which attracts over 500,000 people from all over the country to see master sand-sculptors from all over the world competing for $20,000 in prizes,” said Adrienne Maguire and John Hamel of the Revere Beach Partnership, which puts on the festival each year. “This year’s event begins on July 12 and concludes on July 15th. We invite you to enjoy the sculptures, foods, exhibitors, and most importantly, our beautiful beach. There are many activities for the young ones in our Children’s village and we hope you will all join us for the fireworks extravaganza on Saturday night.”
