Palumbo Passes RHS Puck to Ciccarello

After decades as the Revere High School (RHS) hockey coach, Jim Palumbo is passing the puck to current softball coach Joe Ciccarello.

Ciccarello – a former hockey coach at the old Savio Prep School – has been named the new RHS hockey coach starting next year.

Athletic Director Shaun Hart told the Journal last Friday that Palumbo had approached him in March and indicated he was ready to retire as head coach.

Hart said that he opened up the job and had numerous applicants, including Ciccarello.

Ciccarello has been the RHS softball coach for the last several years, but has a great hockey-coaching career already under his belt. Ciccarello had been the head coach at Savio for many years and took the program on to win a couple of state championships.

Hart said they couldn’t resist picking a successful coach from within.

“He took over a program with 14 kids in it and built it into a state tournament team,” said Hart. “His record and his knowledge of hockey were insurmountable. We would have been fools not to take advantage of that.”

Hart said that Ciccarello will remain the head coach of the RHS softball team as well.

In other coaching news at RHS, third-year teacher Erin Parker was promoted to the varsity field hockey coaching slot.

Parker has been the junior varsity coach for the last two years.

She played field hockey in college and high school and hails from western Massachusetts.
