Contracting In Revere – City needs stronger safeguards

It is apparent that something must be done by the city to ensure that its vendors are insured and are, in fact, the people the city is contracting with.

Recent contracts awarded to a vendor paid for trimming the city’s trees did not show or reveal much of a vetting process by the city.

Checks were paid to parties other than those the city contracted with.

The entire messy affair is now part of an FBI, Inspector General and State Police investigation.

In this instance, the sloppiness comes back to a hurt the city and to hurt its reputation.

We urge the city to employ a vetting process as part of the protocol before awarding contracts.

Given the recent revelations, it would seem like the right thing to do.
