Boys soccer team wins season opener, 2-0

The Revere High boys soccer team kicked off its 2010 season on the right foot with a solid 2-0 win at Triton Regional Friday.

Senior midfielder Leo Giraldo potted the initial Revere goal of the season in the first half, assisted by Captain Breny Guzman. Giraldo and Guzman two of the 10 seniors on Coach Nik Tower’s squad.

Sophomore Quias Ghulan then added an insurance marker in the second half when he delivered a free kick from about 40 yards out into the box that deflected off the head of a Triton defender past his own keeper and into the net.

Senior Patriot keeper Alfonso Rosales earned the shutout in goal for Revere.

“It was a nice way to start the season and it was a solid team effort,” said Tower, whose squad will be looking to reach the post season state tournament after falling short by a single point in 2009. “We have a solid starting lineup as well as some players who will really help us coming off the bench.

“We’ve been working hard in the pre season and the team seems to be coming together,” added the coach, whose Patriots are captained by the senior duo of Guzman and Andres Herrera.

Tower and Company play at Malden Catholic today (Wednesday) and then journey to Central Catholic Saturday. They will continue as road warriors with contests at Saugus on Monday and at Lynn English on Wednesday.
