Softball team drops a 4-3 heartbreaker

The Revere High softball team appeared to be on the brink of victory in its game with Saugus last Friday, carrying a 3-1 lead into the top of the seventh inning. Pitchers Briana Lauletta Sara Selevitch had combined to hold the Lady Sachem offense at bay, while Ashley DeFraia and Cassandra Zullo delivered timely hits to bring across the Lady Patriot runs.

However, Saugus turned the tables with three runs in the final inning and then held on for a 4-3 triumph.

“It was a tough loss for us,” said RHS head coach Joe Ciccarello. “It was a game that we thought we had, but then it slipped away from us.”

Earlier in the week, the Lady Pats played against a strong Danvers team, but saw a 3-1 deficit early in the game balloon into a 10-1 deficit thanks to some errors.

“We’re still making too many mistakes in the field that allow teams to have big innings,” said Cicarello. “We’re also not coming through with timely hits and leaving too many runners on base.”

The Lady Patriots were set to take on Marblehead this past Monday and play today (Wednesday) at Swampscott at 7:00 under the lights. The Revere girls also will be on the road next Monday and Wednesday before finishing out the season the following week with three home games.

“We’re looking to finish the season on a strong note,” said Cicarello, “not only for our seniors to end their careers with their heads held high, but also for our underclassmen to build for the future.”
