Joe Ciccarello has been named as the new head coach of the Revere High School (RHS) softball team. Athletic Director Keith Correia and Principal Dr. David DeRuosi made the appointment on June 18.
Ciccarello succeeds coach Joe Nichinello at the helm of the program. Nichinello has been the varsity softball coach for the past 30 years and had reapplied for the position that was opened up to new candidates at the end of the 2009 season.
Ciccarello previously coached the softball team at Savio Prep, where he was also the highly successful head coach of the boys hockey team. Ciccarello is a teacher in the Math Department at Revere High School and has served as a dean of students.
Correia said all head coaching positions in the RHS athletic program are opened to candidates every three years, as stated in the Revere Teachers Association contract.
“We are just following contract obligations through the RTA,†said Correia. “Through the [coaching selection] committee and Dr. DeRuosi, we decided to go in this direction and name Mr. Ciccarello as our coach.â€
The RHS athletic director earlier appointed new head coaches for the 2009-10 school year in boys cross country (Mike Flynn), boys soccer (Nick Tower), golf (Ben Murphy), and girls basketball (Diana DeCristoforo).
Ciccarello met with prospective softball players for the 2010 team on the last day of school. He has named Revere schoolteacher Lia Peacock as the junior varsity coach.
