On the campaign trail

Attorney Phil Boncore, a councillor at large in Winthrop, has pulled papers in anticipation of a possible run for Robert Travaglini’s vacant senate seat. Boncore will apparently be running as an Independent. By running as an Independent he can skip the primary.

Last night at Joe Tecce’s Restaurant in the North End, Representative Anthony Petruccelli’s campaign committee hosted a well attended fundraiser. Petruccelli, who hasn’t yet officially announced for Trav’s seat, is off and running. Boston Mayor Tom Menino and Boston City Councillor Sal LaMattina are backing Petruccelli and were in attendance. About 200 people packed Tecce’s. Also, Congressman Mike Capuano is apparently set to endorse Petruccelli.

Meanwhile, Revere City Councillor Dan Rizzo continues to run hard early on. A spate of Rizzo signs have have been placed in Winthrop, where Rizzo is said to be concentrating.

Toomey drops out

Cambridge Representative and city councillor Tim Toomey has apparently decided he will not be seeking the senate seat vacated by Robert Travaglini. The popular Cambridge politician had been posturing for a run.

A Winthrop candidate running as in Independent candidate may shortly be announcing.

City Councillor Dan Rizzo and a large number of sign holders held a visibility late yesterday afternoon on Broadway.

Water and Sewer

Opening the water bill over the past year has been easier to digest than in previous years, but expect a little argida this year as bills are going up.
Last year water and sewer rates stayed the same - no increase or decrease - but this year will not be the same, according to Mayor Tom Ambrosino.

Underlying Huzzahs

Anytime a big election comes up in Revere, every politician around seems to begin to turn unrelated issues into a reason to advocate for the candidate of their choice.
Sometimes those stump speeches are blatant.
Other times, they’re not so obvious - if they exist at all.
Monday night at the Council meeting, City Clerk John Henry made the announcement that an election had been called by the state. Usually, this is followed by no speeches or comments.
However, the race is on and five councillors supporting Dan Rizzo used the time to make thoughtful and obvious campaign speeches on his behalf. To those who don’t particularly support him, it was irritating and it showed on their faces.
In one funny aside, Councillor Mark Casella - who is torn between the Eastie Candidate and Rizzo, the Revere candidate - said he would love to support Rizzo, “but I live in Ward 6 and unfortunately, I cannot vote for you.”
There was silence and awkwardness for at least a minute.
Then, Councillor Rizzo - a Ward 6 resident - said, “Well, unfortunately I can’t vote for you either Councillor Casella.”
No one was sure how to take it, but it was comedic.
On Rizzo’s side, a colleague who supports him was irritated by what he considered low antics at a committee meeting about Roseland’s recent Legislative gaffe. At the meeting, Revere State Rep. Kathi Anne Reinstein seemed to make Rizzo’s opponent, Anthony Petruccelli, into the savior on the issue, thereby perhaps giving him a boost locally over Rizzo.
“It’s just showing that they’re trying to make him the savior at the State House on this issue when it was the Revere City Council who saved us on this one,” said the colleague.
Whether this was paranoia or reality is uncertain.
What it does show is that there is really going to be some mean behind the scenes drama underlying this race.
Thank goodness it’s only 60 days long…

Rizzo versus Petruccelli

Councillor at Large Dan Rizzo is off to a fast start in what many around here are considering a sprint to the primary to be held the day after Memorial Day for the senate seat vacated by Robert Travaglini. Rizzo and his advisers are treating the special election with a high degree of focus that finds Rizzo spending the past few days going door to door in Cambridge. Also, Senator Jarrett Barrios is apparently organizing forces for Rizzo in the Cambridge wards.

Representative Anthony Petruccelli has been passing out stickers and organizing his campaign staff. His political literature is expected to flood the district. In addition, Petruccelli is said to have the key support of House Speaker Sal DiMasi and Boston Mayor Tom Menino. Some political know it alls claim such support is crucial. Others claim it does very little to swing and election with the smaller demographic.

It will take at least a week or two of watching these two closely as their campaigns come together in order to assess what their chances are. Right now, the best guess is that both candidates are at equal places, struggling to get out in front, and trying to figure out which way to effectively do that.

Beachmont Stairs

City councillors unanimously pushed an eminent domain taking proposal to a public hearing at Monday night’s Council meeting.
Mayor Tom Ambrosino is pushing a plan that would take Beachmont Avenue to allow for the state Department of Conservation and Recreation (DCR) to build a new set of stairs to Rocky Beach.
Neighbors voted unanimously last summer to put the stairs in that location. The other option was on Winthrop Parkway, across from the MDC park.
There is opposition on the Council, and there has been more than 50 years worth of tusseling in the neighborhood.
